Courteney does not deliver in this book
As a fan of Bryce Courtenay and an avid reader of historical "faction", I have to say that this book was a real disapointment to me. I found the characters in the story had no depth, and the repetitiveness of the themes were annoying. I was really interested in the idea of a fiction based on the Children's Crusades and the novelty of the Pied Piper of Hamelin tied into the plot was at first interesting but became tedious as the piping of the rats and the calling of the birds were used over and over to get out of one sticky situation to the next. I persevered and managed to get through to the anticlimatic end, but not without continually wondering to myself why I should continue reading this very average book.
