The Best of Crime Fiction
By an Amazon.com customer
Mystic RiverMystic River by Dennis Lehane
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01
Well ok, the first book on this list is in order. Quite simply the best crime novel ever written. It's more than just crime fiction, it's a 'deeply affecting moral drama'
Gone, Baby, Gone (Harper Fiction)Gone, Baby, Gone (Harper Fiction) by Dennis Lehane
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Dennis Lehane is one of my favorite authors. I picked Gone Baby Gone as the best of the Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro novels but frankly, they're all good.
Lucky YouLucky You by Carl Hiaasen
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $0.63
I'm a huge fan of Carl Hiassen and the South Florida crime fiction sub-genre. Lucky You is my personal favorite. Not a lot of suspense but hysterically funny.
Strip TeaseStrip Tease by Carl Hiaasen
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $0.01
An absolute riot. Don't let the lame Demi Moore movie stop you from reading it, this novel is twisted fun.
The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector)The Silence of the Lambs (Hannibal Lector) by Thomas Harris
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.27
The movie's great, but so is the novel. One of the best crime novels ever written.
Red DragonRed Dragon by Thomas Harris
Buy new: $17.95 / Used from: $0.16
Often immitated.... This is an excellent police procedural that is often copied. Must read for any crime fiction fan.
Rum PunchRum Punch by Elmore Leonard
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.27
There are so many great Leonard novels to choose from, but this is my personal favorite. All the great dialogue, double-crossing, and humour we expect from Elmore Leonard.
Get ShortyGet Shorty by Elmore Leonard
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $0.22
Tough call for a second Elmore Leonard pick but I settled on Get Shorty. The movie is great, but so is the book.
Angels Flight (Harry Bosch)Angels Flight (Harry Bosch) by Michael Connelly
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Michael Connelly is one of the most consistantly good crime novelists working today. Angels Flight is Bosch's best.
The Lincoln Lawyer : A NovelThe Lincoln Lawyer : A Novel by Michael Connelly
Buy new: $10.78 / Used from: $2.53
Tough call for the second spot, but I think this non-Bocsh novel is a great read.
Gone WildGone Wild by James W. Hall
Buy used from: $0.50
I'm a big fan of James Hall, another South Florida crime writer. Hall's novels are a little darker than Hiassen and his prose is often poeticly beautiful.
Bones of CoralBones of Coral by James W. Hall
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
Another great read from James Hall. All the elements of a South Florida crime novel: Quirky criminals, brutal violence, & twisted humour.
L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole Novels)L.A. Requiem (Elvis Cole Novels) by Robert Crais
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
As good as anything Michael Connelly has written.
Purple Cane Road (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)Purple Cane Road (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries) by James Lee Burke
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
I'm a big fan of James Lee Burke. In paticular I like the moral ambiguity of his novels; the blurred lines between right and wrong. He's also one hell of a writer.
A Simple PlanA Simple Plan by Scott Smith
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Quite simply one of the best crime novels I've ever read. There's no quirky humour here. This novel is bleak, dark, and depressing. An uncomprimisingly brilliant novel.
Child 44Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith
Buy new: $15.74 / Used from: $0.01
The best crime novel to come out in a long time. I complained a little about the sappy ending, but this is still a great novel.
The BottomsThe Bottoms by Joe R. Lansdale
Buy new: $19.65 / Used from: $1.00
An exceptionally good novel that transcends genre fiction. This isn't just a great crime fiction novel - this is a great novel - period.
True Crime: The NovelTrue Crime: The Novel by Andrew Klavan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
A fast paced, race against the clock page turner, that is elevated by great characterization, sharp dialogue, and dark humor. A very entertaining and perceptive novel.
Down RiverDown River by John Hart
Buy new: $7.78 / Used from: $3.69
Excellent sophmore effort. Gothic melodrama, a complex plot, rich characters, great dialogue, and a solid mystery.
Eyes of PreyEyes of Prey by John Sandford
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.26
The best of the popular Prey series. Sandford gives us one of the most entertaining serial killers in crime fiction; the strikingly handsome, narcotic popping Dr. Michael Bekker.
Rules of PreyRules of Prey by John Sandford
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.74
Rules of Prey kicks the Lucas Davenport series off with a bang.
Gone for GoodGone for Good by Harlan Coben
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Coben writes wildly convoluted, enormously entertaining thrillers but as entertaining as his novels are, they're pretty forgettable once you've read them. I'm pretty certain that Gone for Good is the best of the bunch, but I might have mixed it up with a different novel!
Triggerfish TwistTriggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Tim Dorsey writes South Florida crime novels on crack. His novels are more than just quirky - they're flat out satire. More comedy than suspense, his novels can be wildly entertaining. Triggerfish Twist is his best.
AFFAIR OF THE MUTILATED MINK COAT, THEAFFAIR OF THE MUTILATED MINK COAT, THE by James Anderson
Buy used from: $5.00
This is the second of three old fashioned who-dun-its written by James Anderson. Set in 1930's England, these novels poke gentle fun at the mystery novels of that era, while at the same time delivering a who-dun-it that would keep Dame Agatha guessing.
And Then There Were NoneAnd Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $2.25
Agatha Christie wrote some great mysteries but, in my opinion, her crowning achievement was And Then There Were None. Brilliant concept, deftly executed.
The Manchurian CandidateThe Manchurian Candidate by Richard Condon
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
A little dated, but this ground breaking novel still stands up.
