Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
In catchy verse and with large-scale, eye-catching artwork, this picture book offers both practical and absurd suggestions for getting a reaction from a baby. Each double-page spread proposes a new idea for encouraging a response. A smile? Grin like Papa Crocodile. A coo? Sing like Daddy Robins do. A grin? Tickle the baby under its chin. Readers and listeners will find themselves wiggling their ears and making faces as the rhyming text rolls along. All the wild animals shown in action early in the book reappear as stuffed animals on the final pages, when big sister gets a smile from the baby and tucks him into bed. Broad black outlines and flat areas of bold colors clearly define the characters and settings with wit and style. This upbeat, easygoing picture book encourages older siblings to interact with babies and toddlers in ways that should be fun for everyone. Phelan, Carolyn

Customer Reviews

Not so good2
This bright book looks enjoyable.
Its appealing art, vibrant colors, sweet images, snappy rhymes, and good printing will entice parents and little ones into a disappointingly thoughtless presentation of deer horns instead of antlers [Or shake your horns like Daddy Deer], bright green crickets, and bland poetry:

How do you make a baby coo?
Sing like Daddy Robins do.

Or, like Mama Chickens,
cluck all day,

Or like Papa Crickets,
fiddle away.

Language in a simple 103 word book should not detract from the overall experience.
Young children deserve better.

This book as an object is terrific.
The art is wonderful.
The concept is fine.
The text needs a rewrite.

Great bedtime book for dads to read to their kids.5
You make a baby smile by grinning like Papa Crocodile, or by acting like any of the other playful animal Papas and Mamas in this book for young children. The animal fathers in this book share equal time with animal mothers, and are shown happily care giving and playing with their children. The illustrations are bright and joyous, and this is an especially appropriate book for bedtime for little ones.

A great book for the preschooler. We were introduced to this book at a toddler story time and had to purchase it for home. My son has loved this book from age one. Animals, giggles, and nice pictures to look at!
Don't hesistate.
