Editorial Reviews
From the Publisher
Two Lives specializes in publishing quality books for children in families headed by gays and lesbians. The number of children being raised in alternative families is increasing daily, and we believe that these kids deserve to see their lives reflected in the books they are reading.
From the Author
It was important to me to create a book for kids in gay and lesbian families that wasn't an "issues" book. I thought a counting book would be easy enough for very young children to enjoy, and the fact that the families were not traditional wouldn't even have to be mentioned in the text. Because the book is so subtle, it's a good one to use in schools and libraries with ALL children, to let them see families that might be different from their own.
About the Author
Bobbie Combs has been involved in the children's book industry for 18 years in a variety of ways. She has been the manager of two children's bookstores, the children's book buyer at a book wholesaler, and a children's book reviewer. She co-founded Two Lives Publishing to fill a void that she had noticed in children's publishing - that there were very few books being published for children in households headed by gays and lesbians.
Customer Reviews
glowing
In a world where most trips to the bookstore end up with me leaving empty handed, its so great to finally find a book that i am comfortable sharing with my child. I am a heterosexual living the "accepted" life in a heterosexual marriage, and to me, it would be an utter crime to NOT share with my son and daughter ALL of the love on God's earth. Regardless of your religious or moral pursuasions, it is most important that our children understand love, and I am so pleased with this purchase...my children are too, and i know they will be better adults for it. Hopefully, if enough of us raise our children to respect one another we can make a difference. 123 is well written and the illustrations are brilliant. A+!
Amazing Illustrations
What makes this a book a "must-have" for any child, are the incredible illustrations. Regardless of your age, you find yourself trying to count all of the objects on every page. This book is so much fun and I cant wait to see more books illustrated by Danamarie Hosler !
A Must Have in Your Child's Collection!
This book is quite groundbreaking, and is excellent in the way it portrays our differences as not-so-different to children. Very thoughtful, well-written, and beautifully illustrated - a must have in any child's collection! 123 A Family Counting Book, and many more like it, cater to gay parents and their children.
