![]() | The City of Ember (The First Book of Ember) by Jeanne DuPrau
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01 An amazing book on so many levels. Language is beautiful; premise is startling .Characters are memorable and make you care. There is a male hero but also as important is a female with an important position. Initially a similar premise to The Giver but original thereafter. My daughter read it at 9 and understood the concept and content. There is a brief mention of death; no sexual references.

![]() | The Giver by Lois Lowry
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01 Similar premise to City of Ember. Easy language; the plot unfolds gradually - the child must have some patience to get into it. ItÂ’s given in 4th grade but my 12-yr old was better able to grasp the nuances. Death is addressed. There is no direct sexual reference except for a line that talks about "stirrings" & a rule that prevents seeing other people without clothes-appropriate to the story.
