![]() | The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
Buy new: $15.83 / Used from: $0.01 Ageless classics that I re-read many times as a young boy. They inspired me to try to reach Narnia through my closet, but the closest I came was in my dreams. Also check out the audiobook and radio theatre versions.
![]() | The Black Cauldron (The Chronicles of Prydain) by Lloyd Alexander
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.69 Another series that introduced me to the realm of fantasy, where a young boy (or girl) can rise from humble beginnings to become something so much more. Magic, battle, good versus evil, friendship ... it has it all.
![]() | The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.88 "This is a book no fantasy reader should miss; Beagle argues brilliantly the need for magic in our lives and the folly of forgetting to dream." --Nona Vero. I couldn't agree more.
![]() | The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $11.99 A fantasy tale where the reader gets sucked into the book he is reading - literally! If you only saw the movie, there is so much more that the book offers. Great edition of this classic tale.
![]() | Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: 10th Anniversary Edition (Harry Potter) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $16.06 A classic of modern fantasy in which the world of magic exists next to the more mundane world. Enough said.
![]() | The Wrinkle in Time Quintet Boxed Set (A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Many Waters, An Acceptable Time) by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy new: $23.09 / Used from: $18.42 A Wrinkle in Time is a time travel/alternate reality tale that captivated me as much as it boggled my young mind. I was the better for reading it though, and enjoyed Madeleine L'Engle's other works as well.
![]() | The Hobbit (Essential Modern Classics) by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy used from: $0.01 THE classic fantasy adventure novel - the hero's journey. Easier to get into than the Lord of the Rings trilogy which I reccomend reading later in high school.
![]() | Star Wars Trilogy by George Lucas
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $1.75 Epic fantasy in a sci-fi setting. Another great example of the hero's journey and an inspiration to millions. The original 3 stories (episodes) are still the best. If you can find the orginal radio drama, it is a rare treat. More in-depth than the movies.
![]() | Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $0.76 A "real world" tale with a touch of the mythic. Better than required reading has any right to be. ;')
![]() | The Black Stallion by Walter Farley
Buy new: $6.50 / Used from: $0.01 All of Farley's books in the series are excellent. There was a time in my life when I wanted to be a horse.
![]() | Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.28 One of the first books I remember reading. I really identified with the character, which made the story that more entrancing. Many of Judy Blume's other books are wonderful as well, including Superfudge and Hello God It's Me, Margaret. Not fantasy, but fantastic.
![]() | Treasure Island (Signet Classics) by Robert Louis Stevenson
Buy used from: $0.01 The original swashbuckling tale. This one made me want to be a pirate!
![]() | Robinson Crusoe (Barnes & Noble Classics Series) (B&N Classics) by Daniel Defoe
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.24 Stranded on a island away from it all with little hope of returning to civilization. Yes, this puts the imagination into overdrive.
![]() | The Ghost of Thomas Kempe by Penelope Lively
Buy used from: $0.38 I read this ghost story/mystery when I was in 4th or 5th grade. It made quite an impression on me and I never forgot it. Well, I almost did, but was inspired recently to track it down so that my son and daughter could read it with hopefully the same thrills that I experienced.
![]() | Elric of Melnibone 1 by Michael Moorcock
Buy used from: $3.28 High fantasy with concepts that might be a bit heady for the younger set, but ones that I was able to grasp around the time of middle school. An albino prince of a dying empire, a sword that steals souls, powerful magic, clashing gods and goddesses and a multiverse of realities.
![]() | The Call of the Wild (Aladdin Classics) by Jack London
Buy new: $4.99 / Used from: $0.01 What is it about stories from the animals' perspective that speaks so much to the young? A great adventure tale of the dog Buck who is transformed by the life in the wild, great white north. Also read White Fang by Jack London.
![]() | Tailchaser's Song by Tad Williams
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 To be fair, one must include this Tad Williams classic about the a cat that goes to find a lost friend and discovers a fantasy world of cats (much like Watership Down). Good stuff, and a primer for Tad Williams later, dense, LotR rivaling high - fantasy epic Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn.
![]() | Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy Gift Set by Margaret Weis
Buy new: $16.31 / Used from: $10.99 For fans of fantasy and role-playing like the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons, this sweeping series is hard to beat. Packed with memorable characters that face difficult decisions that the reader grows with throughout the stories.
![]() | The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit by David Eddings
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $4.95 Another series that really draws you in because of the characters. Orphaned Garion starts out as a nobody and becomes a magic weilding hero that saves the world. A familiar plot, but told so well. After putting down the last book of this and the follow-up series, you'll feel like you are saying goodbye to close friends.
![]() | Magician: Apprentice (Riftwar Saga) by Raymond Feist
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 I can list the Belgariad without also mentioned the great Magician novels of Feist's Riftwar Saga. Again, it is the detail characters that really make this come to life. Tolkienesque, but very much it's own creation. Awsome magics, existence threatening evil and two fully realized worlds round things out. Be sure to get Magician: Master as the first book ends with a cliffhanger.
![]() | Hardy Boys starter set by Franklin W. Dixon
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $14.04 Not every book was "great" and the characters and technology are dated now, but by and large they all delivered on the goods. This series was really got me into the mystery novel genre. If you or your young reader likes them, consider purchasing the entire 66 book set. Nancy Drew wasn't bad either. ;']
![]() | Favorite Greek Myths by Mary Pope Osborne
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $3.72 It is hard to have all this other fantasy and magic without a core of mythology to build upon. The Greek myths were my first "fantasy" stories and things snowballed from there. By 5th grade I was reading any mythology I could get my hands on, from Norse to Native American.
![]() | Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.00 Certain mainly for the the younger ones, but thinking of it makes me smile to this day. What if in your town, the weather brought food and drink instead of rain and snow? And what happens when that weather takes a turn for the worse?
