MORE THAN A MOM explores how women can lead rich, fulfilling personal lives while parenting a child with special needs. The authors' skillful blend of research, personal experiences, and feedback from over 500 mothers across North America results in a book that is jam-packed with practical strategies, advice, and reassurance for mothers trying to create more manageable and fulfilling lives.

MORE THAN A MOM addresses the universal concerns and questions of all mothers, coupled with the added intensity of raising children with disabilities. This how-to guide looks at the challenges mothers face at home, at work, and within themselves, with special attention paid to:

Staying healthy both physically and emotionally;

Keeping friendships;

Staying organized;

Maintaining your marriage;

Nurturing interests and goals;

Seeking flexible work options;

Changing careers or starting a business;

Rejoining the workforce;

Finding specialized childcare;

Advocating for your child.

The mothers who were interviewed for the book have diverse backgrounds and family dynamics. Given their differences and the fact that their children have such varied disabilities, it s striking that these mothers face such similar issues. MORE THAN A MOM provides mothers with many voices and solutions that will resonate with their own circumstances. Husbands, extended family, friends, support organizations, and service providers will also want to read this insightful and fact-filled book.

An Excellent and Long Overdue Guide for Moms5
MORE THAN A MOM is more than a book: it's a long overdue acknowledgement of what moms give to their children: in this case, children with special needs. Baskin and Fawcett provide mothers with a smorgasbord of practical and achievable strategies for working towards a full and balanced life. By the time you finish reading this book, you'll be convinced that you CAN take care of yourself while nurturing and advocating for your child. The authors may not be arguing that you can 'have it all' (what mom can?), but they are making the case that you can -- and should -- enjoy plenty of it.

Okay book, but not what I was looking for3
Overall, I think the book had good information about things you need to know when raising a special needs child. I was disappiointed however that it did not have more real life stories about moms of special needs children. It had quotes but did not have in-depth stories. I enjoy reading more about how other moms are balancing raising a special needs child and working and raising other children etc. The information was okay, however most of it I already knew about. I don't know what I was expecting or wanting. I think I was wanting more stories about moms balancing life rather than just "how to"
information. Again, it was okay, but not what I was hoping it would be.

A MUST READ!5
It's so refreshing to read a book that focuses on positive, real life needs of exceptional children. I found every chapter to have useful, realistic information for parents and professionals alike. I would highly recommend this book not only for parents who have children with abilities, but for educators in general. Well done!
