Many problems with DF titles
I used to play Rainbow 6 on line a lot. found Delta force in '98 and I really liked the unlimited playing field. when I got to Task Force Dagger, I gave up on the DF series and moved to Ghost Recon.
In this comment, I will discuss the first 4 Delta Force games that are in the package. I'm also going to try not to do a magazine type review. I just played the game, I don't do reviews for a living.
Team Death Match
as far as a FPS goes, it's not too bad playing TDM. The thing I like is you're not stuck having to take the same route because the map restricts you. You can sneak around the long way. That is the most realistic aspect to the game. An unlimited playing field.
Guns are pretty decent, showing arcs in the shot (except for Task Force Dagger). You have to adjust for elevation and in some of the titles - wind.
I really liked the swimming part. that was cool. you could swim underwater to avoid getting shot, to get to a position where you had some protection. You could blow up some buildings and trucks.
Playing Coop is a different matter - First off, only in the first DF (the original) can you join directly. with DF 2 and the rest, you have to log onto NovaLogic's server to game with others. There was a program for DF2 and Land Warrior called IP4DF2, and IP4LW that allowed you to join directly, but Novalogic's last updates killed that. With Land warrior you can only update to 1.00.31 to use IP4LW.
Ok, with online Coop, here are some of the many issues that I've complained to Novalogic about:
Enemy can shoot/see through: walls (concrete, stone, steel, etc.) or from underground in tunnels, but you can't.
For joining players, you can't kill AI (for the most part) unless you shoot them in the feet.
If you play co-op, only the serving player can see incoming enemy helicopters, joining players can't till it's destroyed.
Game will sometimes punt a player without reason.
You can die for any reason, sometimes just by walking in a certain spot.
AI don't run smoothly for joining players, they are in a standing position and 'blink' (disappear and reappear) in say, 10 meter intervals.
If you destroyed a tank inside a building, the building would flash (disappear and appear.)
Task force Dagger was a total rip-off. Done by Zombie Studios, and almost exactly like Land Warrior, but some colors were changed on a few buildings, a couple of new buildings were added (but you can't enter most of them), and too many redundant weapons that don't shoot worth a damn. AI is the same as Land Warrior, and if you like to play cooperative online, you have to update the game because Zombie Studios didn't incorporate it into the game. There are lots of maps posted. Some are decent.
I bought it when it came out, and I totally regret it.
Now, alot of people complained about the AI that they aren't very good - well that's debatable. I don't expect enemy AI to be able to kill me at over 100 yards with a pistol - One shot. Or over 150-200 yards with an AK and hit me (while I'm running) in the head, first shot.
On the flip side, enemy AI don't have good movement tactics. Well what did you expect for games that were made to run on a PII? Even Land Warrior only needed a P2 400 MHz processor. And people think that a software company is gonna create a game where the AI is soo good, it's like having other humans playing with you - And this is supposed to run on a computer that was written for a P2 400? In this, it's just not practical to expect that kind of processing load. Personally, if you want really awesome graphics and real great AI, go and join a paint ball club, or join the Army. That's real. otherwise I feel people shouldn't set their standards too high considering these limitations.
But to be totally honest, I'm not a very good judge of whether enemy AI is good, decent, fair and so on, but I don't really care enough, plus, I don't expect a computer to make dozens of generated enemy to react like a human would playing from another pc.
Also, if I'm supposed to be a part of an elite fighting force, I expect to be better then my enemy. Otherwise, what's the sense of playing the game? It's a fantasy. I'm supposed to be the best, I get in, kill 'em all, and save the day. That's what I expect to be doing in a game like this.
GRAPHICS:
Of course most of the older titles are really boxy, so graphics are poor by today's standards. First two titles didn't use 3-D acceleration, so you had low framerates. Land Warrior was the first. So there's not much use commenting on it. Probably do a lookup for screen shots of the game. Try Delta Force Barracks. com
Delta Force Extreme is a face-lift for the First Delta Force game. and as far as I can tell, that and the use of 3-D acceleration is the only improvements to it. So if you're a 'Graphics needy' person, get it. Otherwise, get the original one and save some money.
CHEATING:
there was sooooo much cheating and hacks for the first 3-4 games, I got tired of all the online brats who couldn't/wouldn't play fair. Novalogic did frig-all to fix it, and they lost another customer. I'm sure they lost a lot to Ghost Recon, and the first Battlefield game (1942).
In all honesty, Novalogic fixed these games just enough to just run - And never to reach their full ability.
These games could have been some of the best Tactical FPS out there, and Novalogic got either lazy, stupid, or greedy. They could have been sooo much more, but fell flat. Too bad.
Personally, from DF1 to Black Hawk Down, if graphics were all equal, I'd probably say that DF2 had the most potential. Grass to hide in, water to swim across, ghillie suits that actually made you harder to spot, fog that really worked, unlimited playing field, parachuting in, punji sticks here and there, and building, ships, and other vehicles that could blow up, it had the potential to be really good.
There are actually clans that still play this game (DF2). Delta Force 2 had it's moments.
IF you do get these titles I will recommend a few things:
first, stick with windows XP, and I find the game runs better on a FAT32 partition then NTFS.
Next, the older titles seem to run better on ATI Graphics cards then Nvidia - regardless of size. For example my older pc has a Ti 4200 card (128 meg card), and the fog don't work right (or most of the graphics), but on my ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory, game runs perfect.
I've found alot of sound issues using the 'Team Talk' program built into the game, so I've never used it. If you're gonna get on with a bunch of people online and you wanna voice, get Ventrilo.
10 Years of Delta Force
The Delta Force series of games were the main competitors of the Tom Clancy games, both of which featured a much higher level of realism than other first generation First Person Shooters. This collection includes all of the Delta Force games from the now ancient looking DELTA FORCE, to the more modern TEAM SABRE. Each game focuses on the same things: team based tactical shooting, strategic mission planning, and fast twitch FPS combat. These are not games where you are an invincible hero running-and-gunning your way through hoards of terrorists. You are as vulnerable as a real man, and only through careful planning and team tactics can you succeed.
The games included are:
1. Delta Force
2. Delta Force 2
3. Delta Force Land Warrior
4. Delta Force Task Force Dagger
5. Delta Force Black Hawk Down
6. Delta Force Black Hawk Down Team Sabre
The oldest few are really showing their age these days, and graphically will not impress anyone. They all are handicapped by small maximum resolutions and must be played in 'windowed' mode to even be playable. Despite graphical limitations, the games themselves are very interesting. It's very strange that this venerable series of games has been left on the wayside. Clancy games are still being made, and selling well enough; why no new permutations of Delta Force?
This is a collection for a true fan on the series. If you are not already familiar with Delta Force, some of the games in this collection will not really impress you that much, but if you take the time to work through them, even the older games, you will find that they are well worth the time to play. The soundtrack to Black Hawk Down is an added bonus.
Delta Force Black Hawk Down PC games series
Before all, i apologize if my english is not good enough, the reason is my native languages is spanish, and im from Mexico, i had been trying to purchase this game Delta Force Black Hawk Down and the expansion Team Sabre for many years but sellers dont had it on stock or they dont deliver to Mexico, i tried in Amazon USA, Amazon Canada, other sites en England, Spain and always the same, they dont deliver to Mexico, so when the 10th Aniversary Collection comes out i tried again, but still i cant get the new games of the Delta Force series like Joint Operation, Typhon Raising cause the same reason dont deliver to Mexico. Is a pitty cause there are many players in Latin America that cant get the games like me. Well, the game graphics are not the better but are enough to have fun and play, but the real value is likely the freedom of movement the character have in game and the online multiplayer option, really Novalogic dont know what a mine gold they have with this game if they sell around the world... we are old players since the launch of the game (maybe 4 or 5 years) but still new ppl coming to play this game. I hope in the future this game series could be purchased without restriction in our countries of Latin America.
Well thank anyway to amazon for sell good games.
