Product Description

There are few images more chilling than an abandoned ship drifting at sea. Ghost Ships is an anthology of the best true-life accounts of vessels, which for whatever reason, never made
port. These are stories that prove the real mysteries of seafaring life are even stranger and more chilling than any fictional account.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea, many ships have met with a tragic end. The first section of the book, Doomed Vessels, includes the most famous, such as the Titanic, and the Lusitania--sunk by a torpedo in 1915. The next section, Haunted and Phantom Ships, explores the modern-day observances of supernatural events. Here are stories of ominous ghost ships, such as the Flying Dutchman, said to appear as an omen; and of mysterious figures that are glimpsed aboard haunted ships, such as the Queen Mary, where visitors have seen the figure of a lone woman. Nautical mysteries such as the Mary Celeste, a ship found empty and adrift in 1872, make up the final section of this book.

Ghost Ships explores the tragedy and what lies behind these amazing narratives
and enduring legends.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise of Angus Konstam and other books he has written:

"While Titanic does indeed feature this famous tragedy, it details the history and salvaging techniques of other ill-fated ships...Booty, bounty, and the activities of bloodthirsty pirates add extra spice to these dramatic accounts. The reference section is as juicy as the body of the work with its tantalizing facts and informative tidbits."
--School Library Journal, on Titanic

"Author Konstam, onetime Arms Curator at the Tower of London and lately Chief Curator at a maritime museum in Key West, has put together a pair of oversized paperbacks, stuffed with photos and drawings. These two titles are remarkably well done. Konstam covers the entire history of piracy, from the miscreants that Caesar hanged in ancient times down to the pirates that infest corners of the Far East today. Feature pages about the various types of ships favored by sea brigands are especially choice, complete with excellent color drawings and plans."
--KLIATT, on The History of Pirates

"Renowned historian and museum curator Konstam, in association with the National Maritime Museum, has produced a masterly account of exploration in the 15th and 16th centuries...Lavishly illustrated with maps, charts, and paintings, this book includes informative chapters on the construction of ships and the navigational science of the era. Essential for all public and college libraries, this is an enjoyable book for lay readers as well as specialists."
--Library Journal, on Confederate Submarines and Torpedo Vessels 1861–65

Tales of the Mystery of the Sea5
Down through the centuries there have been an awful lot of ships lost at sea. So it is no surprise that once in a while a ship ends its days in a strange way. The stories of these ships are the ones told here.

The first section of the book covers ships that sank, usually with enough of an interesting story to justify its inclusion. This includes ships like the Titanic, the Lusitania, and the battleship USS Maine. It also includes some lesser known ships that likewise sank, blew up, or otherwise died in a way that makes for a good story.

The second part of the book is on ships that have ghostly tales told about them. This includes the Queen Mary, the Flying Dutchman, even the USS Thresher. These are stories that have remained current in spite of the current view that there can't possible be anything such as ghosts.

The last section is on ships that have created mysteries that remain a mystery to this day. Here is the story of the Mary Celeste, found drifting and abandoned with a half finished dinner on the table. Here are the stories of some ships like the USS Cyclops, lost in the Bermuda Triangle.

These stories are not new. The Mary Celeste was found in 1862, almost a hundred fifty years ago. In this book the story is well told, including separating out some commonly believed fiction. Recommended for anyone intersted in the sea.

Ghost Ships5
This book obtains the facts of the numorous lost and sunken war, civilian and merchant ships and submarines as well as their lost seamen and those few seamen who lived to discuss their tragedies at sea. It as well obtains the facts of salvaged ships. It continues with an addition of spirits [ghost] of many ships. Each incident in the book of Ghost Ships, was thoroughly examined and studied prior to its editing. Many ships are known for being haunted and only a few sunken and/or lost ships have ever been remembered. However, numerous known ships have been both sank and/or lost however, being that it wasn't for the book "Ghost Ships" they wouldn't receive the knowledge that each haunted, sunken and/or lost ship should along with thier crews. Being that the average person has no belief in spirits, when alone they do and will at times have a change of mind. Spirits not only have been known of, heard of by ear but, have been witnessed by sight to be true as well. There have been numerous ships that sank and are haunted. Many of those ships have been witnessed by Lighthouse workmen. The book Ghost Ships not only is an educational book but, a joyous one to read as well!. I recommend this book to read for both knowledge of the seas and enjoyment.
