Cheapest way to get your Harmony to work with PS3
Can't complain about this product. Even though the remote is basically a throw away component because all I really needed was the USB IR dongle. Anyone who needs a solution to make their PS3 work with their Harmony remote, this is it. It's especially nice because having the Blu Wave remote allows for an easy way to program your Harmony by using all the features of the Blu Wave remote.
Nice IR receiver
Works right out of the box. Now i can control my PS 3 with my Logitech Harmony remote!! Wish the USb Dongle was half the size though so it doesn't stick out as much(that's why 4 stars instead of 5).
The Bare Essentials For A Great Price
I recently purchased a PlayStation 3 primarily to play Blu-Ray movies on my new HDTV. I was a little more than frustrated to realize the official remote uses RF to communicate with the console system, effectively rendering my amazing Logitech Harmony One remote useless. I came across this peripheral while browsing late at night and rejoiced.
It comes with the remote and the USB IR receiver. I didn't have to do anything more than plug it in to my system. No configuration needed.
First of all, like others have explained, this is a bare-bones solution for those looking to control their PS3's video features. If you don't mind having more than one remote for your entertainment center, it would be best to buy Sony's remote. You can't turn the console on/off with this remote, you can't control "advanced features" such as angles, a/b programming, and the like.
What it can do is navigate the PS3's main menu, the BD movie's menus, play, pause, scan, and chapter skip. The "advanced features" can still be accessed through the on-screen display you would normally use when controlling the system with the gamepad (by pressing the triangle button). For me, this is no big deal since I'm not one to use a/b repeat, or other features on a regular basis. The lack of the power control isn't a big deal to me either because I just turn the system on when I'm putting in the disc.
It was super easy (as usual) to program the controls to my Harmony One universal remote. A quick key-learn session and I was in business. I even made custom "button" icons for the touch-screen. It works flawlessly with the USB receiver.
So to sum it up, if you're looking for a remote for your PS3, and don't mind multiple remote controls, get the Sony official remote. But, if you're like me, and want all the command on one (IR) universal remote, this is a great, simple option to easily control all the basic video-viewing functions.
