Editorial Reviews

Album Description
XX is the band's debut national release, featuring re-mixed material from their hard-to-find independent releases Mushroomhead(1993), Superbuik(1996), and M3(1999). Quality Q-pack packaging, killer production and ultra hi-gloss artwork makes this one of the most sought after releases of 2001.

Although classifiable as nu metal, the nine-piece Mushroomhead don't rest on the sugar hooks or one-shot blasts that are associated with the genre, instead expanding and twisting ideas in a manner that's genuinely bizarre and thoroughly entertaining. "Before I Die" is a furious headbanger, while "Never Let It Go" is reminiscent of Faith No More circa Angel Dust, and "Born of Desire" is like a head-on collision between Slayer and a symphony orchestra. For those who love a raw, serrated riff with no interference, "Episode 29" is 1 minute 35 seconds of pure nectar. Ultimately, this Cleveland group's effort to expertly integrate styles and strains is 98 percent successful. This artistically progressive metal ensemble deserves attention. --Steffan Chirazi

Customer Reviews

Derivative drivel. Two stars for two good songs.2
Yes, I know, as does the entire world.
Slipknot ripped you off.
Who cares, Slipknot wins hands down.
As for this disc.
Two decent tracks and a ton of filler.
And I've had it with the rap/rock stuff.
Enough. That particular marriage was never meant to last.
Like disco, enough already.
Not a must buy for anyone.
Download Born of Desire, and Solitaire, skip the rest.

This albums hook is the keyboards.....3
If this album was instrumental, it would be atleast 4 stars. But the singers and the lyrics destroyed the songs. I love the keyboards and the Nu-metal mixed with it. So anyways, I compare the band more with cradle of Filth than anything else, due to the epic keyboards and the heavy chug chug sound they do. However, the vocals I think are more like a slightly less rappy Cottonmouthkings, and add a goth feel to the whole thing. Reviews of the songs:
1. Before I Die- A heavy start to the album. Some keyboard parts are interesting. Other than that, I don't care for it. The Nothing's grunt vocals are already getting on my nerves. 65%
2. Bwomp - I don't know why, but I think of the Immortal's Mortal Kombat song when hearing it. Its a pretty rappy song. The weakest thing here is the lyrics. 75%
3. Solitaire Unraveling - The major hit here, and even with some bad vocals, it still comes off pretty good. Probably my third favorite song on this album. 85%
4. These Filthy Hands - Second best song on here for me. The lyrics are atleast ok here. Keyboards make this song interesting. 85%
5. Never Let It Go - The best of the album for me. The keyboards do a type of hook over and over. Vocals on this one are a bit better due to the lack of understanding what they say. I must say the mixing of this track also was pretty cool. 90%

6. Xeroxed - I like this one some. Its a heavy grind to it. However this is a bit lack luster. 70%
7. The Wrist - Ok vocals, I guess. Not very interesting. Its a bit goth, but nothing to interest me.
8. Chancre Sore - Enjoyable and a bit funny. The epic keyboards reminds me of Cradle of Filth. 75%
9. The New Cult King - Very much reminds me of Faith No More here. However the lyrics make hardly no sense, and the music isn't very interesting. 65%
10. Empty Spaces - Pink Floyd cover from The Wall. Its very short and sort of pointless. 80%
11. Born Of Desire - Nothing worth talking about here. Keyboards are ok here at best. 70%
12. 43 - Sort of interesting song here. Not sure how to describe it. 75%
13. Fear Held Dear - Not very interesting. 65%
14. Too Much Nothing - This is not very interesting. 70%
15. Episode 29 - Sort of ok. instrumental. 70%
43. Bwomp (longer track)- Nothing better about this version. 70%

First major label release5
With this album being thier first major label release it didnt sell all that great. It has very catchy lyrics, hard hitting bass, and riffs that will get stuck in your head. Once you play the disc you want to hear it again just to be able to catch everything that you missed the first time. There is much that can be said about this album besides buy it and you will not be disappointed in what you hear.
