Minutes to Midnight stands to defend Linkin Park's status as the hardest-rockin' softies in mainstream music. Like its predecessors Hybrid Theory (2000) and Meteroa (2003), Minutes to Midnight flexes plenty of decibel-heavy muscle ("Given Up," "Bleed It Out," "No More Sorrow") and made-to-order, melodic radio fare ("Leave Out All the Rest," "Shadow of the Day," "In Pieces"). But for all its volume, Linkin Park likes to paint its heart openly on its sleeve with suspicious sonic drama, as in the palpably saccharine "Valentine's Day." Fortunately, co-producer Rick Rubin brings all these elements to pinnacle effect with the surprise "Hands Held High." On past efforts, the combination of breezy keyboard, arpeggiated guitar, choral vocals, and a military snare-beat would yield another slab of smarm, here MC Mike Shinoda drops the two best verses of his career, blending vocal styles with singer Chester Bennington for a moving piece that's as welcome a repertorial addition as Linkin Park is ever likely to muster. --Jason Kirk
Customer Reviews
good; not as good
I love this band, and I enjoy this album, but, like other reviewers, I don't think it's as good as the first two... Still, it's definitely worth a buy.
BORING!
This album is just simply boring for most of the tracks. The songs are mostly just too soft. The album starts off with promise after the intro with Given Up, which is a really hard-rocking angst-filled track that I really like. Bleed It Out is a really cool song, and one of the only ones with Shinoda, sounds like Linkin Park from previous albums. Shadow Of The Day is a complete U2 rip-off, but overall is a pretty decent track. What Ive Done is a pretty typical LP ballad track, and the lyrics are great, I definitely like this one. Hands Held High is an anti-Bush song, wow really groundbreaking right, and it is not that good at all. No More Sorrow is another anti-Bush song, but this one is really cool, it is one of the few hard-rocking tracks on the album, the last good song on the album. The ones I didn't mention and the songs after No More Sorrow are all really slow, boring, and absolutely horrible. Overall this album is not very good at all, a true disappointment for Linkin Park, in my and most others opinion!
Different, but still good in my opinion
The newest album fron Linkin Park titled "Minutes to Midnight" sure is a lot different than "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora", but I still liked it. It is probably the weakest of their albums, but it does have some very good songs on here.
1. Wake - Just an intro, doesn't need a rating.
2. Given Up - 5/5. The one song on the album that sounds the most like their older music. Really good.
3. Leave Out All The Rest - 5/5. In my opinion, the second best song on the album.
4. Bleed It Out - 3/5. I never could get into this song that much. In my opinion, Mike Shinoda's parts in the song are the only good parts. Chester's parts are just ok.
5. Shadow of the Day 5/5. In my opinion, the best song on the album. I could listen to it over and over.
6. What I've Done - 4/5. Great song, but is a little old now.
7. Hands Held High - 1/5. The worst song from Linkin Park in my opinion. I always skip this one.
8. No More Sorrow - 5/5. Another great song on this album.
9. Valentines Day - 3/10. The only good part of this song is the second half. Not a huge fan of the first half.
10. In Between - 2.5/5. It's ok, but not great.
11. In Pieces 3.5/5 - Alright song.
12. The Little Things That Give You Away - 2/5. I wasn't crazy about this song either.
So overall, I give this album 4 stars.
