![]() | Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.98 Every bit as good as Funeral. Complex, literate, dramatic as hell, and surprisingly accessible. My pick for the album of the year; this is the sound of a great band at the top of its game.
![]() | Sky Blue Sky by Wilco
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.24 Jeff Tweedy rediscovers melody. Beautiful songs, great guitar work, and heartfelt vocals. "Impossible Germany" is worth the price of admission alone.
![]() | Between Daylight and Dark by Mary Gauthier
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.64 Ms. Gauthier was already a great songwriter, Joe Henry's production took it to another level. Stark, haunting, masterful tales of the disaffected, displaced, and downtrodden. "Can't Find the Way", the story of a Katrina refugee, speaks far more eloquently to the plight of that disaster's victims than any political diatribe. A masterpiece.
![]() | Magic by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.50 ...speaking of great songwriters...the Boss reunited with Spectorian grandeur, the E Street Band, and most importantly, Rock and Roll. Magic indeed.
![]() | Because of the Times by Kings of Leon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.50 ...speaking of Rock and Roll...the Followil boys just keep getting better with each release. Epic songs with the swagger of the vintage Stones. That's a good thing.
![]() | The Story by Brandi Carlile
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.69 This is first and foremost a country soul album. The songs are quite good, the production (by the always reliable T-Bone Burnett) is excellent, the singing is spectacular. Comparisons to Patsy Cline and Janis Joplin are not out of line. She's that good.
![]() | Future Clouds & Radar by Future Clouds & Radar
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $8.97 Dizzyingly diverse double set from former Cotton Mather frontman. This is predominently Beatlesque power pop at it's finest.
![]() | Graduation by Kanye West
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.60 He is impossibly egotistical, doesn't rap all that well, and cops huge chunks of old records for hooks. He's also a genius. Nearly every track has ended up on a mixtape for the road. I surrender.
![]() | Through the Belly of the Sea by Morningbell
Buy used from: $0.70 Extraordinarily diverse psych-pop from Gainesville. Great guitar work, clever arrangements, and hooks galore. Highly recommended. Don't miss 'em if you get a chance to see them live.
![]() | In Our Bedroom After the War by Stars
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.00 Stars are certainly not the first act to use love and war as metaphors for each other, but few have done it better. This is stellar indie pop with great arrangements and girl/boy vocals.
![]() | These Streets by Paolo Nutini
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.49 Fantastic pop music from a world-weary 19 year old. Impossibly soulful and great songs to boot, particularly "Last Request". Has toured with Amy Winehouse and has a great cover of "Rehab" (though it is not on this disc).
![]() | Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.25 Another great album from dependable Austin group. They have evolved into a more radio friendly band over the years without selling out one whit. Catchy songs still go in unexpected directions and no one sounds quite like them.
![]() | Favourite Worst Nightmare by Arctic Monkeys
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.49 One of my favorites from a year ago avoid the sophomore jinx. Rocks harder than the debut and songwriting is just as impressive.
![]() | In Rainbows by Radiohead
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.38 The Bends and OK Computer are two of my favorite albums of all time. Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief are not. This is a great return to form. Mostly mellow (though as usual, darkly so) and accessible, it still sounds like no one but Radiohead. For me, one of the most pleasant surprises of the year.
![]() | Blueberry by Color Filter
Buy new: $44.99 Ethereal electronic "chill" discs are usually not my cup of tea. Particularly when sung entirely in Japanese. This is a spectacular exception. One of the most beautiful albums released in a long time. Sounds a bit like a cross between St. Etienne and a David Lynch score. Be adventurous and give it a try.
![]() | Little Voice by Sara Bareilles
Buy used from: $9.01 There were a number of really good new adult oriented pop vocalists this year and Ms. Bareilles is one of the best. Not a bum track on the disc, her songwriting even outshines her voice.
![]() | The Trumpet Child by Over the Rhine
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.99 An unexpected delight of jazz, blues, and cabaret pop. In lesser hands the retro arrangements could be nothing but a gimmick but this is superb. "Nothing is Innocent" and "Trouble" are the standouts.
![]() | Civilians by Joe Henry
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.95 Criminally underappreciated songsmith and producer, and one of the few lyricists working who is worth reading. Though not his strongest album start to finish, it does contain his best song, the utterly brilliant "Our Song". You owe it to yourself to give it a listen and then start purchasing each of his dozen or so discs. You can thank me later.
![]() | On a Clear Night by Missy Higgins
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $7.24 Polished, sophisticated, tuneful pop music from Australia and unfortunately only available presently as an import. A late discovery but really strong.
![]() | Overpowered by Róisín Murphy
Disco/House/Electro dance pop is certainly not something I spend much time listening to. If there is more out there as good as this I will have to rethink that philosophy. As infectious as dance music gets and dazzlingly creative. Ms. Murphy is the former lead vocalist for Moloko.
![]() | The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse by The Besnard Lakes
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.20 Imagine a post rock band with vocals supplied by the Beach Boys and you kind of get an idea. I know, shouldn't work at all....but it does.
![]() | Introducing Joss Stone (Piano/Vocal/Guitar) by Joss Stone
Buy new: $13.73 / Used from: $8.00 The album cover is awful, the title (it's her third disc) is silly, and she's certainly not going to win any awards for poetry. Nonetheless, despite her tender age, this woman has charisma, soul, and one of the finest voices on the planet.
![]() | 100 Days, 100 Nights by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings
Buy new: $51.99 Another great soulstress, it could be argued that Ms. Jones has earned her stripes more honestly than Ms. Stone. She has been singing since long before the blond haired Brit was born, and her band (who also backed Amy Winehouse)is simply the tightest soul outfit since Booker T. and the M.G.'s. Songwriting is a bit of a weakness though.
![]() | American Gangster by Jay-Z
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.94 Only Kanye released a better hip hop disc this year. Incredibly dramatic, this is a concept album based on the movie of the same name. While I am really tired of listening to the same old "hard life being a drug dealer" gangsta raps, this is several cuts above. Impeccably produced and delivered, it is truly cinematic.
![]() | It Won't Be Soon Before Long by Maroon 5
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.90 First guilty pleasure on the list. Blatantly commercial, super slick pop with a lead singer that encourages screaming teenage girls. Problem is, I can't quit humming every dadgum melody on the disc and don't ever turn the dial when any of the 4 thousand or so singles gets played on the radio. And my kids like it too.
![]() | Version by Mark Ronson
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $5.47 Uber producer enlists friends for a great party disc of unlikely covers. Most of them are really good to brilliant. The best is Amy Winehouse covering the Zutons' "Valerie" which ends up sounding like a long lost Motown classic.
![]() | Raising Sand
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.39 Out of leftfield collaboration that succeeds brilliantly. Beautiful songs, remarkable harmonies, and two of the best voices in music.
![]() | The Shepherd's Dog by Iron & Wine
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.48 I always respected this critically acclaimed singer-songwriter more than liked him, as his hushed delivery and spare production just didn't hold my interest from track to track. These rich arrangements make all the difference in the world. I still respect him, but now I regularly listen to him.
![]() | Under the Blacklight by Rilo Kiley
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.07 Neither the sellout nor the rebirth of Fleetwood Mac this was reputed to be, this is a hook-filled retro blast of an album anchored by the irresistible "Breaking Up".
![]() | The Budos Band II by The Budos Band
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.99 Awe inspiring polyrhythmic instrumental funk workout. Great organ and horn charts, and an afrobeat groove that won't quit. Downright dangerous to listen to in the car.
![]() | Flow Dynamics by Flow Dynamics
Buy new: $38.99 Can't always tell what is live and what is turntablist trickery, but I don't really care. This is funk at its finest.
![]() | Neptune City by Nicole Atkins
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.25 Huge voiced singer-songwriter drops a timeless lush pop classic. Cass Elliot crossed with Roy Orbison and produced by Phil Spector?
![]() | I Am the Man by Simone White
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $9.99 Reflective, atmospheric chamber pop with a political edge. Reminiscent of a female fronted Lambchop, this is perfect for late night listening.
![]() | God Save the Clientele by The Clientele
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.19 Melodic and quite retro sounding (think The Byrds, The Monkees, and the Zombies all collaborating in a modern studio), this is the second disc in a row on this list produced by Mark Nevers. Each track is well written and many would be huge hits if there was any justice. Listening start to finish can be a bit too caloric though.
![]() | The Reminder by Feist
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.70 Her last release was one of my absolute favorites and was nearly faultless, this is more hit or miss. But the hits are grand slams. "1,2,3,4," despite being overplayed courtesy of the ipod ad, is a strong contender for single of the year.
![]() | Stolen Apples by Paul Kelly
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $14.13 Yet another gem in the canon of this most gifted of songwriters. This one falls somewhere in the middle of his many discs (all are worth checking out, Words and Music is my favorite), and that is high praise indeed. "God Told Me To" is one of the best political songs of the year.
![]() | Impale Golden Horn by Horseback
Buy used from: $7.99 Primitive, spare, acoustic folk music from the Carolina woods. With unusual instrumentation (sticks, accordion, upright bass, and violin), this sounds like nothing else released this year, and it is both timeless and wonderful. "In Our Talons" and "Bur Oak" are the standouts.
![]() | Funk This by Chaka Khan
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.25 While all of the attention and praise was heaped on the latest discs from Bettye Lavette, Candi Staton, and Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan flew under the radar with this treat. It is certainly not perfect, but when she kicks into "Foolish Fool" it becomes apparent that she is the only one of the bunch who can still compete with her former self.
![]() | The Stage Names by Okkervil River
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.50 A highly acclaimed band I have only recently discovered, this is great indie music. Dense, literate lyrics coupled with cleverly arranged accessible tunes.
![]() | Made of Bricks by Kate Nash
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $3.86 Sure, vocally she is a ringer for Lily Allen, and some of her lyrics are snarky for the sake of being snarky. "Foundations" is still one of the best singles of the year and several other tracks are just as good. Overall this is a highly promising debut.
