A Baker's Dozen Of The Best.....2007's Top Ten Albums + 3
By an Amazon.com customer
Into WhiteInto White by Carly Simon
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.00
I'm loath to pick a covers album as my Album of the Year, but the fact remains...no other release this year was as strong as INTO WHITE. A return to her earliest stylings, Simon's voice was both sexy and sublime, cushioned by understated, intelligent arrangements. Simply lovely!
Into the BluesInto the Blues by Joan Armatrading
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.90
Armatrading has always been a top notch vocalist and songwriter, but with INTO THE BLUES she comes into her own as a guitarist. Up there with June Millington and Bonnie Raitt, Armatrading has a style that is easy and unforced, but always enjoyable. A very nice surprise!
Washington Square Serenade (DIG)Washington Square Serenade (DIG) by Steve Earle
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.28
More country than a lot of his more recent releases, there's still an edge to this wonderful amalgamation of sounds and styles. The anger is still there, but it's been tempered by new-found love. One of Earle's best!
Crazy Ex-GirlfriendCrazy Ex-Girlfriend by Miranda Lambert
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.66
Not as instantly appealing as her 2005 debut effort, CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND still proved that Lambert is a force to be reckoned with. Her ability to meld styles and hop from genre to genre never seems forced.....instead, it reminds the listener of another classic country chameleon, Miss Emmylou Harris. And that's pretty good company to be compared to!
AfterwordsAfterwords by Collective Soul
Buy new: $34.98 / Used from: $5.89
Not nearly as strong as 2004's brilliant YOUTH, AFTERWORDS still has enough hooks on it to enjoy time after time!
The Sermon On Exposition Blvd. [Fold-out Digipak with 14 page booklet]The Sermon On Exposition Blvd. [Fold-out Digipak with 14 page booklet] by Rickie Lee Jones
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $2.38
Jones' strongest release in years! Yes, it's pretty much a concept album, but a fun, thoughtful one. After years of spotty efforts, Rickie Lee proves she's still a contender, someone who can't be counted out!
Freedom's RoadFreedom's Road by John Mellencamp
Buy new: $9.97 / Used from: $2.49
Once again, not a disc to be ranked among the artist's best, but a good Mellencamp album is usually equal to a great one from almost anyone else, and that's the case here!
Hope & GloryHope & Glory by Ann Wilson
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.96
Another covers album (Man, they ARE taking over the world!), but one that, like INTO WHITE, both showcases the strengths of what we've come to expect from Wilson as an artist over the years, plus some new vibes. She uses her killer guest list to GREAT advantage, but is never overpowered by them.
The AwakeningThe Awakening by Melissa Etheridge
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.62
A thoughtful concept album, Etheridge wears her heart on her sleeve here. Always honest and sincere, the disc (sadly) lacks the variety of such other life-changing chronicles as Cindy Bullens' brilliant 1999 disc SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HEAVEN & EARTH or last year's Album of the Year, Rosanne Cash's amazing BLACK CADILLAC. Still, both moving and strong.
VoilaVoila by Belinda Carlisle
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $5.99
You might think a pop album done completely in French might be a risk, but Carlisle pulls it off. There's a sense of fun that is very Go-Goesque, but it's coupled with a maturity that is both sexy and smart.
The Bluegrass Elvises, Vol. 1The Bluegrass Elvises, Vol. 1 by Billy Burnette
Buy used from: $7.20
A little bit Country, a little bit Rockabilly.....a whole lotta fun! These Elvis tunes are given a new spin, with both Billy Burnette and Sean Camp in fine voice.
Necessary EvilNecessary Evil by Deborah Harry
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $5.22
A little too much attitude for someone in their 60's, but the disc grows on you more and more with each listen. Hints of classic Blondie pop up here and there....here's hoping that'll happen even more on Harry's next release! In other words, more fun, less posing! Still, there are enough strong moments to give it a spin!
From the Cradle to the GraveFrom the Cradle to the Grave by Dale Watson
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $7.99
Watson is a total original, and this set just emphasizes that. That steel-in-velvet voice is here, as are honest, unadorned songs. Now, if he could just stretch a tad bit more!
