Outstanding alternative to a basic Swiss Army Knife
Bought this as a size upgrade to my trusty Swiss Army pen knife. I can't trim my fingernails as well with this, because it's so much larger, but WHAT A KNIFE! It's a great everyday tool to carry, and the clip lets me put it in my pocket. It's also just big enough to scare my co-workers when I whip it out to carve up an apple at lunch. Overall, a wonderful "guy" thing to have -- like a good, trusty watch.
Nice, multi-purpose knife
If you're looking for nice, well-built knife this is a great choice. The Buck brand is known for its quality and this knife is no exception. The blade is very sharp and seems like it will hold its edge for a long time. You can quickly flip it out when needed. My one minor complaint is the way you unlock the blade to close it. You have to press down on a metal piece that partially protrudes from the inside of the knife. Once you get used to using the release, it's fairly easy to use and you can unlock and close the knife with one hand. However, when you first use it, the release mechanism seems a little odd and cumbersome. Also, the release is located right where the blade retracts to, so once you unlock it, get those fingers out of the way. Many Buck and Buck-knife clones use a similar release.
It's a sharp looking knife (no pun intended). It has kind of a rugged, yet high-tech look to it. It seems very sturdy but is pretty light.
This does not have all the tools you might find in some other multi-tool knives, but it's not as big or heavy as those other knives either. You don't get things like a corkscrew or tweezers. In addition to the standard knife blade you get spring-loaded scissors, a flat and a Phillips screwdriver. The scissor work well. If you have to do a lot of scissor cutting, you're better off with a real pair of scissors, but these will work well in a pinch. It easily cut through things like heavy plastic packaging. I haven't had to use the screwdrivers in a real world situation, but they seem like they would fit all but the largest or smallest screws. If you really have to torque down some screws you are better off with a real screwdriver, but if you don't have one, this will work as an alternative.
The pocket clip is functional and seems to hold the knife fairly securely to a belt.
This, like many Buck knives, is a little pricey. However I expect this knife to last for many years and that I'll get my money's worth out of it. I've owned cheap knives before and most of them end up breaking, rusting, or falling apart.
Simple, effective and useful
When I bought this tool, I didn't think I would get much use out of it. I like gadgets and have never owned a multitool before. It was inexpensive, so I thought I would buy it for fun. But since getting it, it really comes in handy...even around the house. It was funny how many times I reached for it for simple things like opening candy at the movie theater for my son. Thank goodness in the dark theater no one saw me whip out the scissors at a kid's movie. Or sitting at dinner and remembering I need to tighten the dining room chairs, but not putting it off, because I don't have to trek off to get my tools. Of even opening the endless stream of packages that come to my house. I'm not handy at all with tools or fixing things, but I'm thinking I will get the Buck X-tract fin, because it has the pliers and scissors. The overall design is excellent. The tools are easy to access. I wear it on my waist all day and at home, and I never feel it digging into my skin or irritating me at all. Overall, this was a great find for a guy who thought it would be a cheap new gadget that would amuse me for a short while. My wife laughs at me, because if I have my pants on, I have my Buck tool with me.
