Nail biting. Thumb sucking. Hair twirling. Scab picking. Shirt chewing. Do you have a habit that's hard to stop? A habit that embarrasses you or gets you in trouble? If so, you're not alone. Lots of kids have habits they wish they could lose. But habits are stronger than wishes. They lock on, holding you tight. Even if you want to break free, you can't. Unless you have the keys.
What to Do When Bad Habits Take Hold guides children and their parents through the cognitive-behavioral techniques used to treat a variety of habits. Engaging examples, lively illustrations, and step-by-step instructions teach children a set of habit-busting strategies in the form of "keys" to unlock the chains holding their habits in place. This interactive self-help book is the complete resource for empowering children to set themselves free.

Customer Reviews
Highly recommended for parents to share with children to help them change their lives for the better
Written by clinical child psychologist Dawn Huebner, Ph.D., What to Do When Bad Habits Take Hold is a handy, softcover consumable book with black-and-white illustrations designed to help young people ages six to twelve overcome hard-to-stop habits like nail biting, thumb sucking, hair twirling, scab picking, and shirt chewing. "It may be that you aren't getting enough sleep. Kids who are 9 to 11 years old need at least 10 hours of sleep every night. Kids ages 8 and under need even more. Lack of sleep affects people in all kinds of ways. It's stressful for your brain and your body, making you more likely to pick, pull, twirl, suck, or chew." The primary focus of What to Do When Bad Habits Take Hold is five different key strategy young people can use - blocking the habit, keeping one's hands or mouth busy with some other more favorable activity, using some activity that involved the same motion (such as sucking water through a sip cub instead of sucking one's thumb), applying a "wake-up" activity to jazz up the daily routine in the part of body associated with the habit (like gargling with mouthwash instead of engaging in a chewing habit), and learning constructive ways to release tension, like laughter or singing. An extremely helpful book, highly recommended for parents to share with children to help them change their lives for the better.
Good Series ...
I enjoyed the 3 books I purchased in this series. It provided a common vocabulary for my son and I and enabled him to realize he is not alone in his worries. PS - I'm a psychologist and professor and recommend this series a lot.
Excellent
As all her books, this is excellent. Her books are excellent adjuncts to therapy and kids and parents like them a lot.
