Whitesnake - Live in the Still of the Night (Deluxe) [DVD/CD Combo]Whitesnake - Live in the Still of the Night (Deluxe) [DVD/CD Combo]
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $5.64
Whitesnake came roaring back in 2003 and we're lucky to have this live document of the greatest frontman ever, David Coverdale, doing what he does best. And what a crackerjack band: guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, drummer Tommy Aldridge, bassist Marco Mendoza: a virtual supergroup. Well-shot, sounds great, excellent collection of songs.
Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $9.89
Led Zeppelin fans waited years for this; before we only had The Song Remains The Same. Now we get performances from 1970 to 1979, covering several tours. I especially enjoy the Earls Court 1975 and Knebworth 1979 footage.
KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 1: 1974-1977KISSology: The Ultimate Kiss Collection, Vol. 1: 1974-1977
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $11.92
This is what all of us KISS fans have waited for: an exhaustive collection of live performances from 1974 to 1977, at the height of their makeup "Golden Age." Paul, Ace, Gene, and Peter created a chemistry that will never be equalled by any other band. Modelled a bit after the Led Zeppelin DVD in terms of pacing and packaging.
Kiss: Kissology Volume II 1978-1991Kiss: Kissology Volume II 1978-1991
Buy used from: $15.05
Picking up right where Vol. 1 left off, this covers the remainder of the makeup years (Unmasked/The Elder/Creatures) as well as the non-makeup years up through Eric Carr's death. More of an "acquired taste" than Vol. 1 but ultimately no less essential. Since I was between 6 and 19 when all this stuff was going on, it's more ingrained into my memory than even the classic years.
Live in California 74Live in California 74
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.87
The Mark 3 lineup of Deep Purple obliterate the stage at the California Jam on April 6, 1974. While the picture often looks blurry (colors bleed into each other, unlike some boots I've seen!) this is worth it because it's the complete set, with some interesting bonus features.
King Crimson: Deja VroomKing Crimson: Deja Vroom
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $8.62
This is not for all tastes, but give it a try. Robert Fripp leads his Crims through an oblique set in 1995 featuring songs from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Then sit back and read his fascinating onscreen liner notes.
David Bowie - Best of BowieDavid Bowie - Best of Bowie
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $8.99
Few artists have gone through as many dramatic changes as David Bowie. Even if you hated one of his albums or periods, something else was always around the corner. Here we get to see him change from 1972 to 1999.
Live in Munich 1977Live in Munich 1977
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.00
The only complete (legitimate) filmed performance of the Blackmore/Dio/Powell version of Rainbow. Fans have waited a long time for this one, and it was worth it. The singing and playing here is nearly unmatched in all these talented men's careers.
Motley Crue: Carnival of SinsMotley Crue: Carnival of Sins
Buy used from: $11.27
In 2005 the original Crue got back together and played a tour based around their heavier material. Consequently, this DVD really rocks, and the camera cuts away every four seconds to show the HOT girls in the audience. Mick Mars rules!
Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73Deep Purple Live in Concert 72/73
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.44
Two shows are contained here: the black and white March 1972 Copenhagen show, plus the ultra-rare "In Concert" Hofstra 1973 set. This is worth it for the latter: Blackmore plays great, Gillan's voice is at its peak, and the camera work focuses on the right soloist (unlike the iffy black and white 1972 footage, which is still a must-own anyway!)
The Best of Musikladen - Vol. 4The Best of Musikladen - Vol. 4
Buy used from: $24.55
A great collection of early 70s clips done by bands like Deep Purple, Santana, Alice Cooper, Nazareth, Free, and the James Gang when they appeared on Radio Bremen's Musikladen TV show (from which MTV's Closet Classics drew much of its material in the mid 80s). This era of music will always be my favorite.
Black Oak Arkansas - First 30 YearsBlack Oak Arkansas - First 30 Years
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.40
This was one of the coolest surprises of 2003: a collection of ultra-rare Black Oak Arkansas performances. The centerpiece of the collection is the late 1974 Albert Hall concert, featuring drumming god Tommy Aldridge as well as the vastly underrated Jimmy Henderson on lead guitar. And Jim Dandy is quite the character throughout this disc.
Heaven & Hell: Live from Radio City Music HallHeaven & Hell: Live from Radio City Music Hall
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $5.95
A superbly filmed document of THE tour of 2007, when the Dio-era lineup of Black Sabbath put aside their differences and played an eclectic set culled from all three of their albums as well as two new tracks. Iommi has rarely played better solos, and Dio sounds the best he's sounded in the better part of a decade.
Blackmore's Night -- Castles & DreamsBlackmore's Night -- Castles & Dreams
Buy used from: $45.00
A magical DVD containing a complete concert from Ritchie Blackmore's Renaissance project, plus a bonus disc of TV interviews, videos, and other goodies. Everyone I've known who've heard Blackmore's Night has become completely enchanted by their music.
The History Of Iron Maiden - Pt. 1: The Early Days (2DVD)The History Of Iron Maiden - Pt. 1: The Early Days (2DVD)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.72
I somehow missed this when it came out a few years ago, but you'd better believe I've been playing catch-up. Great vintage concert footage and an exhaustive documentary. I laughed when Steve Harris told the story of firing the guitar player who couldn't make up his mind about being in the band, so Steve made up his mind for him. "I mean, how do you deal with someone like that?"
Deep Purple - Machine HeadDeep Purple - Machine Head
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.95
I have to include this because all the original members (yes, including Blackmore) are interviewed here about the making of Purple's most successful album ever.
King Crimson - Neal and Jack and Me (Live 1982-84)King Crimson - Neal and Jack and Me (Live 1982-84)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.30
Two complete King Crimson shows from the 1980s lineup: the short 1982 performance (where they opened for Roxy Music and Robert Fripp wore a tuxedo) and then a headlining show from Japan in 1984, where Adrian Belew wears "MC Hammer" pants and Fripp wears a Miami Vice-style jacket. The guitar solos by these men are just stunning, even though the overall production is pretty bare bones.
Kiss - Kissology, Vol. 3: 1992-2000 (Ltd. Edition 5 disc set)Kiss - Kissology, Vol. 3: 1992-2000 (Ltd. Edition 5 disc set)
Buy used from: $17.81
Volume 3 brings the Kissology series to a satisfying conclusion. It's great to have a full Revenge concert, plus the unedited historic Unplugged Reunion. Ironically, some of the 1996 makeup Reunion footage isn't quite up to snuff, so I had to dock it a point or two, but still essential.
Deep Purple - Concerto for Group and Orchestra (In Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)Deep Purple - Concerto for Group and Orchestra (In Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.95
It was a real treat a few years ago when Purple released this gem from 1969. The whole Concerto is presented here (but sadly no band-only numbers), and the commentary from Jon Lord himself adds a lot.
AC/DC : Plug Me In (2 DVD set)AC/DC : Plug Me In (2 DVD set)
Buy new: $26.49 / Used from: $7.02
AC/DC are truly one of the best live acts in history. This collection has 5 hours of slamming concert footage spanning the years 1976 to 2003. We get one disc of Bon Scott and one disc of Brian Johnson. Clench your fist and become a "tough guy" for the afternoon!
Iron Maiden: Live After Death (Two-Disc Set)Iron Maiden: Live After Death (Two-Disc Set)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.30
How great it is to finally have one of the best metal concert videos of the 80s on DVD. I used to watch this on Beta, for gosh sakes. And of course, the "Story of" Documentary continues. The blue and gold cover is one of the most beautiful in my collection! Can't wait for Volume 3.
Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same (Two Disc Special Edition)Led Zeppelin: The Song Remains the Same (Two Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $6.81
This looks to be a treat: the long-overdue re-release of Zeppelin's concert movie with extra footage. It should (hopefully) greatly improve upon the original film, which was quite spotty in places but for years remained the only non-bootleg place to see the band live on video. High school hero time!
Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)
Buy used from: $14.77
How can I not include Woodstock? So many careers were made (or at least immortalized) here: Ten Years After, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Canned Heat, Santana, Crosby Stills & Nash, Sha Na Na, Richie Havens, etc.
Electric EyeElectric Eye
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $2.75
This disc is worth it for a couple of tracks they did in 1975 for the Grey Whistle Test, back when they were a progressive metal band with abstract lyrics a la Uriah Heep. However, you also get a full concert from 1986 when they were the darlings of MTV. Let's hope we get a Painkiller-era concert on DVD soon!
Starkers in TokyoStarkers in Tokyo
Buy used from: $79.95
Whitesnake Unplugged, with just David Coverdale backed by Adrian Vandenburg on guitar. A great DVD to pop in at the end of a long, hard day and just "chill" to.
Never Say Die: Live in 1978Never Say Die: Live in 1978
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.02
Black Sabbath live in 1978, their final tour with Ozzy Osbourne. At the time a hot young band named Van Halen was their opening act (and blowing them off the stage every night), but the Sabs still had their moments.
Classic Albums: Def Leppard - HysteriaClassic Albums: Def Leppard - Hysteria
Buy used from: $12.99
This is a fascinating look at the creation of Def Leppard's 1987 pop-metal masterpiece, still considered one of the most fully realized studio albums ever. A mini-course in songwriting and production.
The Doors (15-Year Anniversary Edition)The Doors (15-Year Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $2.29
So this is a dramatization of Jim Morrison and his band. So what? This is one wild ride and the concert scenes here are actually more riveting than some real-life concerts.
Dio - Holy Diver LiveDio - Holy Diver Live
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.99
I would have ranked this MUCH higher, as Ronnie and his band play the complete Holy Diver album live, plus some great obscure Rainbow tracks like "Tarot Woman" and "Gates of Babylon," but unfortunately he had a bad cold that night and his voice was relatively shot.
Purple Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition)Purple Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $25.49 / Used from: $8.00
A true guilty pleasure. Prince is an absolute musical genius, and while his acting often leaves something to be desired, he still has a presence onscreen.
