The Grund 18" Brighton Bear is a great gift idea for anyone needing or wanting a teady bear. I haven't heard anything about how washing goes, but the huggableness of the bear is a 10.

plush and cushy
I bought this bear for my mom (70's) who did a stint in the hospital. It was really soft and cuddly. I have no idea how a child might view this product but I think soft and cuddly in your 50's is quite nice!

My daughter loves him
It's super cuddly soft. White so it gets dirty, but you know that anyway. We've washed in the washing machine several times and after almost 4 years it's still holding up.
