Amazon.com Product Description
The HP Pavilion s3200n Slimline desktop PC gives you all the power of a fully loaded home/office desktop in a sleek, silver-and-black chassis that's one-third the size of a traditional PC tower, enabling you to place it unobtrusively anywhere--from your office to entertainment center to kitchen. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. And thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi capabilities (802.11b/g), you don't need to worry about stringing Ethernet cable from your broadband modem in another room.

This desktop is powered by the 2.5 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ dual-core processor, which increases the efficiency and speed of the PC while running multiple programs and the latest multi-threaded software. It features a spacious 320 GB hard drive, and it includes an open drive bay for an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (which can add up to 160 GB of storage). Other features include 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), NVidia GeForce 6150LE video card with 128 MB of dedicated memory (and up to 319 MB of available memory), multi-format memory card reader, a wide variety of connectivity options (including both USB 2.0 and FireWire), and digital audio output for home theater surround sound.

This desktop also comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: AMD's Athlon 64 X2 4800+ dual-core processor is built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. Dual-core technology is like having two processors working together, each one taking care of different applications, so power-users actually experience greater performance when multiple applications are running. Digital media enthusiasts will appreciate the enhancements while simultaneously working in high-definition video and photo editing and audio mixing programs. It includes such AMD features as HyperTransport Technology (which increases the communication between integrated circuits) and Enhanced Virus Protection.

This 2.5 GHz processor offers a system bus with speeds up to a blazing 2000 MHz and each core offers a 512 KB L2 cache--for a 1 MB total. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

  • Hard Drive: The extra large 320 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive has a 3Gb/s interface speed that enables up to 300MB/s data transfer rates (double the speed of the current SATA interface of 1.5Gb/s).

This Slimline PC also includes a drive bay that fits an optional HP Pocket Media Drive, which enables you to add up to 160 GB of additional storage. The Pocket Media Drive also works with any USB-enabled PC, for easy transferring of multimedia files from other computers in your home.

  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has DIMM slots and has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

  • DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.

This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2) and remote control.
Video & Audio
This desktop features an integrated NVidia GeForce 6150 SE graphics/video card with up to 319 MB of shared video memory (allocated from the system RAM). NVidia's exclusive TurboCache technology allows direct rendering from the GPU to system memory by leveraging the bi-directional PCI Express bandwidth. The TurboCache Manager dynamically allocates memory for maximum system performance while intelligent software algorithms maximize application performance. It also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 6 speakers.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This desktop has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. For expansion, this Slimline desktop has one PCI slot (occupied), one PCI-E x16 slot (available), one 5.25-inch external bay (occupied), and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied). Powerful desktop PC but doesn't take up a lot of space5
I've finally decided to replace my 7 year old desktop tower. My previous computer was slow, big, and heavy. This HP Pavilion Slimline is the total opposite. I even upgraded it to Windows Ultimate and it works great!

I've been doing a lot of photo scanning, editing, and organizing. I was able to load my previous photos and install Photoshop Elements 5 and it works well (there is a Vista patch for Photoshop Elements 5). I'm amazed at how fast it is. I was planning on updating the video card since that is a little slow but I think I can wait a little bit as I get into video editing and install the cable from the other room to the computer so I can really use the Windows Media Center functions.

I'm so glad I bought this. I was considering a Mac Mini or a Shuttle but this is the best value if you're not really wanting a Mac.

Good value for the price5
This computer is the heart of our budget home theater. We bought this when Office Depot had a $200.00 rebate, so it was very inexpensive $499.00). We use a very capable Vizio 42 inch 1080p tv as the monitor. We run the audio through an ancient Sony receiver and early Bose Acustimas speaker system (so what if it is almost twenty years old, it still sounds great). The included tuner pulls in our local over the air HDTV stations and they look fantastic on our TV. We record all of our favorite network shows through the media center software included in Windows Vista. Awesome playback of recorded HD content. The picture quality is superior to what we receive through our Brighthouse cable signal (we are going to cancel cable and go with Direct TV for more HD content and superior quality). The 400 gig hard drive is generous enough. We'll be adding a USB external drive once the prices for a TB drive dip below $150.00. Two gigs of RAM are more than sufficient for most purposes. The AMD processor works fine. There is no reason to insist on an Intel processor. We had to upgrade the wireless antenna to get consistent wireless connectivity to our router (we have a big house and our wireless router is pretty far away). The multi card reader is a great feature for viewing photos from our digital camera or putting music on a SD card to use in a portable mp3 player. There is also a front mounted port for HPs proprietary portable drive system (good idea , but the price for the removable drive is ridiculous). Overall, for the net price that we paid for this PC, it is an excelant value for a media center PC.

Fast, compact and beautiful!5
The first thing you're going to notice (and love) is the size of this PC. It's sleek, modern and space saving. It's incredibly easy to set up and start enjoying it.

You'll love Windows Media Center and being able to watch and record HD content. You can even rewind and pause TV shows without recording them, or listen to the news while you surf the net. Another great thing about this little wonder is that is really quiet, I hate noisy computers, especially if you work at night when everyone's sleeping, but you'll barely hear it. The remote is great to watch tv or dvd's, and you can even turn the computer off/on with it!

Games look really good on this one, and Windows Vista looks stunning. Overall, a great computer with a great prize.
