The Baby Bjorn worked for us, but I hear great things about a lot of carriers. As our baby grew, she loved to face out- waving to people, pointing at birds, etc. A great purchase.

Buy new: $35.00 Received as a gift, thought I would never use it. It has turned out to be an essential- not only does it provide a bit of privacy for nursing in public, but it also shaded our baby's face and made it easier for her to sleep. She did *just* start to play peek-a-boo with it, but at 15 months I think that can be expected! Love the patterns.

Buy new: $259.99 If you are going to spend big bucks, make it the car seat. It is something you will use a lot, so you want to make sure it is very safe for your baby. This car seat has been great for us- easy to get our baby in and out, but most of all very safe (the safest available) for peace of mind. Something you can use for a long time as your child grows.

These simple, inexpensive burp cloths were awesome, and our baby hardly even spit up. They are handy in all sorts of unexpected ways, and inexpensive enough that if they get ruined you aren't devastated by it. Throw them over your shoulder to burp, grab one to wipe off a chin, play peek-a-boo, etc. Very useful.

Buy new: $19.99 This turned out to be really useful for when our baby was small. Bathing little ones is surprisingly difficult if your sink is not an option, this frees up your hands and keeps baby safe. Just make sure to ring the pad out after every use and hang it to dry immediately, or it starts to get icky sponge smell :)

Buy new: $17.89 Not an essential, but useful in staying sane from 1-3months. The techniques worked pretty well for us, but the most useful part of the DVD was the "womb sound" track. Goofy, I know, but that + walking around in Baby Bjorn worked to calm our baby when everything else failed around 2 months. For a new parent, any trick that works that well is worth its weight in gold!

Buy new: $176.50 Not a necessity, but a good way to get an inexpensive changing table that is safe (and higher than a bed or the ground, which is nice for sore backs). We lined the changing table with chux, which made for super easy clean-up. Our daughter never slept in the crib, but at 15 months she finally enjoys playing in the playpen for short periods of time, which is nice.

Buy new: Too low to display / Used from: $977.99 Okay, okay... this one is clearly a splurge! You don't need a fancy digital camera (although this one is awesome), but some sort of camera to capture all the amazing moments in your child's first year is definitely recommended :) You won't believe how much they change from day to day!
