Kingdom ComeKingdom Come by Mark Waid
Buy used from: $6.94
Done in the beautiful hand-painted style of Alex Ross, the best way to describe this is; a loose reinterpretation of the Book of Revelation in the D.C. Universe. Amazing work.
MarvelsMarvels by Kurt Busiek
Buy new: $21.28 / Used from: $25.47
Also done in Alex Ross's hand-painted style. It's a retelling of the origin stories of several silver-age Marvel superheroes. Including Spider-man and the original Human Torch.
Batman: The Dark Knight ReturnsBatman: The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $6.50
Frank Miller (of 300 and Sin City fame) reinvented the Batman as a gritty, morally ambiguous, vigilante. If you like the new Batman flicks with Christian Bale, you will like this.
Batman: The Killing JokeBatman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $9.50
Alan Moore (of Watchmen fame) gives us a taste of the criminally insane and definitely evil Joker in this classic. Heath Ledger fans take note.
WatchmenWatchmen by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $7.00
Another morally ambiguous one from Alan Moore. Allow the inhabitants of New York City to be annihilated to save humanity from war, or sit back and watch the world that hates you burn.
From HellFrom Hell by Alan Moore
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $19.75
Alan Moore again with an over-the-top reinvention of the Jack-the-Ripper mythos. This one is not for the kiddies.
300300 by Frank Miller
Buy new: $19.80 / Used from: $4.00
Frank Miller's classic. Greeks, Persians, Patriotism, Mutants, naked dudes (shudder), it's all here.
The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1)The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale (No 1) by Art Spiegelman
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $13.48
Maus got me back on the graphic novel band wagon. This is truly a work of art. It retells the story of a holocaust survivor with anthropomorphic animals serving as an analogue to various people groups. That sounds like it would lessen the impact of the events portrayed, believe me, it doesn't. A really great read.
Superman: Red Son (Elseworlds)Superman: Red Son (Elseworlds) by Mark Millar
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $7.56
This one is just fun. What would happen if Superman's escape pod crashed in a soviet communal farm in Ukraine instead of the good old US of A? Although Batman's origin and presence is a little tenuous, still a very good read.
Swamp Thing Vol. 1: Saga of the Swamp ThingSwamp Thing Vol. 1: Saga of the Swamp Thing by Alan Moore
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $9.99
Many of you might not remember Swamp Thing or ever have even known him to begin with, this will be a good introduction. Alan Moore gives a wondeful view of this tortured man-beast.
