Great Timekeeper
This watch works as advertised, very accurate, tide graph works well (which is the biggest reason I bought this watch). No problems with atomic sync. The watch is light for its size (titanium)and quite rugged. I've been using this as an everyday watch for about 8 months now and apart from a few cosmetic scratches around the bezel, there is nothing else to show the abuse it has taken. The glass shows no scratches at all even after a few bangs against a concrete wall (unintentional). I've worn this watch while snorkelling and deep sea fishing (almost every weekend) and it is holding out pretty well. As mentioned in another review the alarm feature is a bit of a pain to use, but otherwise I'm happy with my purchase. Even without the atomic sync this watch keeps great time - for those occations when you are in remote locations. My only concern is that I think the scratches make the watch look old and worn, with the silver version they would not be visible, but the black surface highlights them. Still a great watch and a good buy.
Virtually indestructible
I asked for this watch for my birthday and I absolutely love it. It has every single feature that you could possibly want. With its titanium casing and sapphire face, this watch is pretty much indestructible. Being solar powered and with automatic atomic clock sync, this watch is perfect for someone who just doesn't want to have to think about it. I don't have to worry about breaking it, resetting the time, or changing batteries.
The only problem I have had with the watch is that the black titanium is some sort of coating or plating, which does scratch off if you aren't careful. The titanium underneath is unharmed, but it does detract a little away from the sleek black titanium look.
Expensive for what you get, but the crystal does not scratch.
I wanted an all black titanium solar atomic watch with chronograph, tide graph, multiple time zones, a tachymeter and a very hard crystal. The watch had to be very durable, but also suitable as a dress watch. I also wanted to be sure that the atomic sync would occur outside the US. There were not many options, and actually, i did not find a suitable watch that had all of them. Ultimately, I sacrificed the tachymeter and back light (which was a difficult compromise) and I went with this Oceanus.
There is no crown on this watch which makes it a bit more comfortable, but also a little less obvious to set & configure. It's not hard to do, but it takes a few minutes to figure out. The watch has many timezones pre-configured, but only one can be seen at a time. The watch mechanically adjusts based on the settings. Onlookers are often impressed by the automatic rotating dials. Resetting the watch from one timezone to another (if they are far apart) can take a minute.
Considering this is a Casio, and other Casio non-dressy watches perform the same features for significantly less money, I opted to look for this watch in Japan. The Japanese models are dual branded as Casio & Oceanus watches instead, some may take issue with that. It does not bother me, but the watch is cheaper when branded with Casio. Take note, any warranty claim will not be honored for a J-spec Oceanus outside of Japan.
Atomic sync on the watch works well if the watch is near a window. Receiving the signal behind walls is more difficult and will often not occur. Phosphorous illumination is short lived, (but not radioactive). Accuracy and durability is excellent. The watch will pause mechanical movement if kept in the dark for extended periods of time to conserve power. It resumes immediately when light is available. Even though I make use of the chronograph and the daily alarm, ambient Fluorescent lighting maintains the charge without issue.
The crystal is very difficult to scratch, which has kept me happy with this watch. There have been a few times where I didn't want to look at the face, for I was certain it would be scratched. Fortunately for me, it has not scratched yet. The difficult to scratch crystal is part of what you are paying for on this watch.
I wear this watch pretty much every day, and ultimately have been happy with the purchase. It manages my office keyboard, as easily as boating & snorkeling activity. I would have preferred it include a back light feature offered in the 500 series model, and that the top beveled edge be finished off with a functional tachymeter.
