Customer Reviews
Personal Vendetta
We believe the review left by the above user to be a personal attack on our business and not a true review of our product. We sell thousands of this product annually through Amazon, our websites and our brick and mortar store and this is the first complaint we have ever received. We understand that sometimes things can happen with any product, but if there truly was a problem with one of our tarts, we would have preferred to have had a chance to correct the situation, especially prior to a negative review. These tarts truly do what we claim and we ask that you give them a chance. Thank you.
Not A Quality Product
My order arrived packaged with shoddy, scuffed-up labels. The product looked old. The tarts literally crumbled in my fingers, hence I was forced to use more of the tart than I originally intended. These tarts do have some fragrance, therefore the 2 stars. However, the fragrance does not last. Overall, I feel this purchase was a waste of time and money.
I contacted the Seller via Amazon to request return instructions. Amazon sent the following confirmation to me:
Hello from Amazon:
Here's a copy of the e-mail you sent to Smoky Mountain Illuminations. Seller responses will be sent to you directly via e-mail.
-------------- Begin message ---------------------
I am not satisfied with the product and I would like to return the tarts. Please forward return instructions.
-------------- End message ------------------------
I received an initial email from the Seller. I responded by telling him I was not satisfied with his product.
Shortly after I first emailed the Seller at Smoky Mountain Illuminations, I submitted my Amazon customer review. Once my review posted, I began receiving angry and accusatory emails from Jeff the seller at Smoky Mountain Illuminations. Here's a sample of our email communications:

Thanks for leaving a bad review before giving us a chance make make the situation right. We sell many of these tarts and you are the first complaint we have received in 5 years. I looked at your other reviews and it looks as though you may be a difficult person to please as all of your reviews are 2 stars. We do not make refunds on packages that have been partially used and we do not refund shipping costs. You may return the unused tarts to the following address and we will refund the purchase price. Thank you for your business and we're sorry we couldn't meet your standards.

Thank you for your prompt response. Unfortunately, I did not believe there was anything you could do to make this situation right. I was rather disappointed that one tart was not able to fragrance my room for more than an hour, let alone 1 - 3 days as your product description states. In addition, the tart literally crumbled to pieces when I attempted to remove it. Yes, perhaps I am a difficult person to please. Recognizing and expecting quality can be as much of a curse as it is a blessing. I am homebound and I rely on internet shopping for most of my daily needs. I have been a member of Amazon.com (USA) and Amazon.com (United Kingdom) since the mid 1990's. In that time I have only written 3 reviews. I apologize if my review offended you. However, I will only take the time to enter a review when I have been gravely disappointed by a product's performance, hence, the standard 2 stars. If you are leery of less than favorable customer reviews, perhaps you would do well to remove your product line from Amazon.com. Once again, thank you for your kind assistance.

The mere fact that you only take the time to write reviews on items "you are not happy with" pretty much say's it all. Let's not say anything about the people who do things right. I truly doubt that I will remove my product line from Amazon.com due to one unreasonable customer. Please return the unused tarts for a refund.

As an Amazon.com customer, I have every right to offer feedback about any product I desire. Your continued emails are harassing. Please stop sending harassing emails or I will report you to the appropriate authorities.
UPDATE: From the Brownfoot Contessa
September 12, 2009
I just checked my review to confirm the above emails posted. I now discover this Seller has posted a counter-review labeling my comment as a "Personal Vendetta!" In addition, he has used the customer rating system to rate his own product...giving his product 5-stars! It is an unprofessional misapplication of the customer rating system for this Seller to rate his own products. Sellers who behave in this manner adulterate the efficacy of the CUSTOMER rating system.
I would like my fellow Amazon.com customers to know there was nothing "personal" about my review. I do not know the Seller personally. He lives in Kentucky. I reside in California. Nor have I had previous experience with his product line.
It is ill-mannered for this Seller to send private emails to Amazon customers in which he engages in name calling and harassment. It is reprehensible on his part to post a review riddled with innuendo and spiteful remarks. His having done so is a violation of Amazon's "General Review Creation Guidelines."
And it is crudely unethical for this Seller to publish a product review that conforms to the legal definition of "libel." And all of this merely because a customer found the quality of his products to be less than satisfactory.
As a longtime Amazon USA and Amazon United Kingdom customer, my recommendation regarding this product is as follows: BUYER BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT AND THE SELLER!
