Amazon.com Product Description
The Fiskars UpRoot weeder makes dandelions and other weeds a thing of the past, with a patented design allows weed removal from a standing position. It's comfortable, quick, and easy. The long-lasting stainless steel blades have serrations that grab and hold the entire root of the weed, and the lever action pulls out the entire root, so the weed will not grow back. The sturdy aluminum shaft is lightweight for ease of use, and the sliding mechanism allows the root to be ejected without ever having to touch it by hand. It's the perfect tool for dandelions, thistles, poison ivy, and all other kinds of root weeds.

Death to Dandelions!
This is an AMAZING tool. The four fork-like blades are inserted around the crown of any weed (especially DANDELIONS). Then you step on the pedal and pry up the weed. The blades dig in and then GRIP the crown, allowing you to pull out the root of even tough nasty weeds. And if the weed is a prickly weed, you don't have to wear gloves to pull it. This is the best gift for ANY gardener and you will love it. I adore this thing.
Inherent weakness
I would like to report a couple of design flaws of the UpRoot weeder. The first flaw is that the jaws are not cut at 90 degree angles where they engage each other at their cams. This causes a sideward force to be applied when clamping the weed which focuses the pressure on the one fixed jaw whose alignment is crucial where it engages the opposing jaw. This lateral force breaks the plastic that is supposed to maintain the alignment and the cams slip past each other. Over time this slippage rounds off the edges of the cams further exacerbating the problem.
The second flaw is that the plastic aligning the fixed jaw is too weak to resist the forces applied to it. I suggest that the pivot pin be replaced by a hardened through bolt with nylock nut that captivates the plastic to resist the lateral force thus preventing breakage. Rather than return my UpRoot for warranty replacement only to have it break again, I removed the pivot pin, enlarged the hole in the fixed jaw and in the plastic to accept a grade 8 hardened 1/4 inch bolt which I then fixed with a nylock nut. The nylock nut allows precise adjustment of the plactic alignment faces and can be adjusted to compensate for wear. This of course requires some mechanical aptitude.
I would have liked to see the sliding ejector be spring loaded so that it returns to the retracted position and not interfere with the closing of the jaws when the jaws are not fully inserted in the ground. For smaller weeds or harder ground, one does not want to make so large a hole if it can be avoided. I plan to retrofit a spring in the near future.
Broke
I used this for about 15 minutes and it was working great. I got to a large dandelion and when I tried to flip it out I heard a crack and it was broke. I returned it the same day.
