Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7Harry Potter Boxset Books 1-7 by J. K. Rowling
Buy new: $122.85 / Used from: $85.38
These books are famous for a reason. Once someone reads past the first chapter of Sorcerer's Stone, they're usually hooked. And if you've seen the movies but didn't like them, it doesn't mean you won't like the books. A book is always better than its movie. These are my all-time favorite books, and I guarantee you'll fall in love with them.
A Wrinkle in TimeA Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.25
This is an odd little book, and it's a bit confusing, but I love it. It's fantasy/sci-fi to the extreme, and the author does a great job with her characters.
Artemis Fowl Complete 5-Book Boxed Set: Artemis Fowl, The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, and The Lost ColonyArtemis Fowl Complete 5-Book Boxed Set: Artemis Fowl, The Arctic Incident, The Eternity Code, The Opal Deception, and The Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer
Buy used from: $49.95
The Artemis Fowl series is pure fun. The first book puts you in an interesting situation; the main character is the villain. Do you root for him to win or not? I also love the author's sense of humor. A great book for boys or girls.
The GiverThe Giver by Lois Lowry
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.47
This book is often read in schools, but it's worth re-reading anyways. It's a "thinking book" about a utopia gone wrong. Very moving, very thought-provoking, very very good.
The Lord of the Rings and The HobbitThe Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
Buy new: $89.95 / Used from: $33.82
These have to be put in here, because they're classics. I personally don't find these particularly engaging, with the exception of the Hobbit - that is a funny book. Some people, usually boys, can get very fanatical about these books, so I suppose they must be good in a way I don't fully appreciate. If you want a shorter, funnier read, just try the Hobbit, which I can vouch for.
Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1)Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1) by Stephenie Meyer
Buy new: $6.04 / Used from: $4.93
I know from personal experience that girls who hate reading love these books. And no matter how much I criticize them for their complete lack of substance, horrible dialogue and weak plot, I still love them. Guaranteed to make any girl stay up until 3am trying to find out what happens next. Series includes Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and the soon to be released Breaking Dawn.
Uglies (Boxed Set): Uglies, Pretties, Specials (Uglies)Uglies (Boxed Set): Uglies, Pretties, Specials (Uglies) by Scott Westerfeld
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $14.89
More girls-only books, but they are quite good. They're all sci-fi adventures that show you a "perfect" future. However, the main character, Tally, finds out that her society has some serious issues... Uglies and Pretties were both excellent, Specials was, in my opinion, not as good.
HolesHoles by Louis Sachar
Buy used from: $0.01
Holes is one of my favorite books. It is funny and extremely clever, and the end is sooo satisfying. It has tons of different threads that are expertly tied up by the end, and you're left saying, "wow, I should've seen that coming, but...cool."
The City of Ember (Books of Ember)The City of Ember (Books of Ember) by Jeanne Duprau
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $4.49
An interesting sci-fi book, it's one of those books you just can't put down. A good book, and it has a sequel which I haven't read...
The Westing Game (Puffin Modern Classics)The Westing Game (Puffin Modern Classics) by Ellen Raskin
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.38
Another book used in schools, because it is so absolutely amazing. It's a mystery that you can try to solve if you dare. The characters are vivid, and the ending is spectacular. A classic.
A Tale of Time CityA Tale of Time City by Diana Wynne Jones
Buy used from: $2.45
This is a personal favorite of mine...I've probably read it 5 times. It's a sci-fi/fantasy about a girl plucked out of 20th century London and thrown into Time City, a place that exists outside the calendar and has contact with people from all throughout history (the past and the the future). It's terribly interesting and very fun. This is a GREAT book!
Inheritance 3-Book Hardcover Boxed Set (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr)Inheritance 3-Book Hardcover Boxed Set (Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr) by Christopher Paolini
Buy new: $42.49
The Eragon series is the epitome of dragon novels. It has elves and dwarves, magic and men, and yeah, it kind of copies the LotR series. It's rather long, but a good read. I haven't gotten to it's sequel yet, and Brisingr will be in stores soon. Great for boys, girls...not as much.
Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (Hardcover)Inkheart by Cornelia Funke (Hardcover) by Cornelia Funke
Buy used from: $5.97
This is a fantasy that I never quite got into as much as my friends did. However, it is an inspiring story about a girl who loves reading...and characters come to life all around her. Some of them are evil. You get my drift. It has 2 sequels...I'm not sure if Inkdeath is out yet though. A fun, kind of long book.
Bridge to TerabithiaBridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.80
This is a short, semi-sad book that anyone can get through. It features the power of imagination and friendship, and I recommend it for younger middle school students, because by 8th grade I felt a tad too old for it.
My Sister's Keeper: A NovelMy Sister's Keeper: A Novel by Jodi Picoult
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.78
An extremely popular but extremely sad book. For teeneage girls, it is a very moving book and everyone always cries. At least thats what I hear, because I haven't actually read it. But all my friends love it, and it's very popular, so I know it must be good.
