Amazon.com Product Description
Make a powerful statement with the Casio GW1400DA-9AV G-Shock men's atomic solar watch, which receives time calibration radio signals which keep the displayed time accurate. It's also solar-powered--charging in either sunlight or indoor light--so you'll never have to deal with changing the battery. This shock resistant watch features an Auto LED light with afterglow, world time for 30 cities, a 1/100 second stopwatch, daily alarm, hourly time signal, full auto-calendar, 12/24 hour format, and a battery power indicator. The watch has water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet).
History of G-Shock
In 1983, Casio launched the shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch. This product shattered the notion that a watch is a fragile piece of jewelry that needs to be handled with care, and was the result of Casio engineers taking on the challenge of creating the world's toughest watch. Using a triple-protection design for the parts, module, and case, the G-SHOCK offered a radical new type of watch that was unaffected by strong impacts or shaking. Its practicality was immediately recognized, and its unique look, which embodied its functionality, became wildly popular, resulting in explosive sales in the early 1990s. The G-SHOCK soon adopted various new sensors, solar-powered radio-controlled technology (described below), and new materials for even better durability. By always employing the latest technology, and continuing to transcend conventional thinking about the watch, the G-SHOCK brand has become Casio's flagship timepiece product.
G-Shock and Baby-G Brand
G-Shock represents the inner force that's within all of us and it's with this inner force that G-Shock was developed more than two decades ago.
Two engineers, with a vision to create the ultimate watch, assembled a rogue team of engineers and named their mission, "Project Tough." Through perseverance and unusual testing methods, such as throwing prototypes out the second floor bathroom window to the asphalt below, they developed the first G-Shock in 1983. This watch was able to withstand their then benchmark of "Triple Ten" criteria, namely 10 years of usage, 10 atmospheres (water resistance) and a 10m fall (shock resistance).
Today more than two decades later, G-Shock watches have exceeded the designers' original benchmark and pushed the limits of what a watch can endure. With 200M water resistance & shock resistance at the heart G-Shock's strength and numerous technological advances such as Tough Solar Power and Atomic Timekeeping, you'll have no doubt why G-Shock is called the Toughest Watch in the World.

Casio's Last for Generations
I am very rough with my watches. I don't take it off to fix the car, mow the lawn, garden, do construction or landscaping digging up bowling ball sized rocks. Before I bought Casio's, my watches would last 2 years then fail. I bought my first Casio 24 years ago when I learned to scuba dive. I wore that watch with a solid stainless steel case every day for 22 years. I changed the battery 3 times, watch band 3 time but the watch is still running today without one problem. Then two years ago I bought this Casio atomic solar watch because Amazon had a very enticing price for it. I have been wearing it nearly everyday since and so far it seems just as durable.
PROS:
1. Almost zero maintenance. If you keep it near a window facing Ft. Collins, CO, there is nothing to do to maintain this watch except wash the dirt off of it. The solar cell seems to charge the battery very well, the clock syncs with Ft Collins at 3 am every night. The only intervention I had to make was adjust for Daylight Savings Time. This could be operator error on my part, but like most people, I only skimmed through the manual.
2. Durable. I have inadvertantly performed my own drop tests with this watch on pavement and concrete.
3. Silver case. Much more attractive than the old black plastic G-Shock cases of the past. The analog hands make this watch more attractive and less nerdy than the big digital LCD displays
CONS:
1. The digital displays for the additional information (date, other time zones, system checks, etc.) are very small. For those advancing in age and close up vision is declining, this watch will be a challenge.
2. Operating manual is very comprehensive and the type is very small. However you can download the manual from their website
3. THICK. All previous reviews are right. This is one thick watch. In 2007/2008 thick is in so not an issue.
OVERALL: I got this watch to be a knock around watch for yard and sports, but it is attractive enough for business casual dress. I do change watches for more formal settings but if I only had this watch, I would not think twice about wearing it with a formal suit or tux.
Even with the cons, I still rate this 5 stars. The value you get with the Amazon price (well below $100) is unmatched anywhere.
Great Watch
I was tired of buying W@l-M@rt cheapies that only lasted a few months and decided to buy a nice watch. I have been using this one for a while and have had zero problems. This is the best watch I have ever owned. The only caveat I have about the watch is it's bulk. I've caught it on the edge while reaching into tight places. Great watch otherwise.
Great Watch
For the money this is a good watch. Like others have said,it is a big and fairly heavy watch. That said its does seem to be well built. To set all the features it will take the manual, but if you are like me I set everything the way I want, and leave it alone. The auto backround lite is pretty cool. The radio receiver for the atomic function seems to be more sensitive than other watches that I have owned. It doesn't have any problem picking up the signal. The things that keep it from 5 stars are, size and weight, backround light is too bright, it almost makes the face hard to see because it temporarily blinds you. And the small day, date window is hard to read with anything less than perfect vision. All in all a very good looking, well built watch.
