![]() | Civil War #1 by Mark Millar
Buy used from: $14.50 We start with Civil War #1. From there, head into Frontline #1 as Iron Man deals with the Stamford Tragedy and it's legal ramifications; and then Wolverine 42 as Logan decides to go after the villian who caused it. Follow these with Amazing Spiderman 532, where Peter struggles with a difficult decision. Next is New Avengers 21 as Cap begins to form the resistance.

![]() | New Avengers Vol. 5: Civil War by Brian Michael Bendis
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.88 There's a line by Cap in New Avs 21 where he asks Falcon if he signed the Reg Act, but it hasn't been passed yet. Continuity gaff you'll need to disregard. New Avs 22 & CW #2 run concurrent to one another as the Registration Act is passed in the middle of each issue. New Avs 22 flows a little better if read before CW2, but could be in either order.
![]() | Civil War: Front Line, Book 1 (Bk. 1) by Paul Jenkins
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.96 AmSpi 533 picks up immediately from where CW #2 leaves off & shows us the hint of a wedge being driven in the relationship between Peter and Stark. Frontline #2 gives us the Bugle's & Norman Osborn's reaction to Peter's big decision in CW2. It also contains a major continuity mixup as it has Peter's big reveal prior to the Reg Act being passed.
![]() | Civil War: Wolverine by Marc Guggenheim
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $9.23 In T-Bolts 104, Zemo and the Thunderbolts are contracted by Stark to take down supervillians who refuse to register. Meanwhile, Wolverine continues his vengence quest for Nitro in Wolvie 43-45 which also brings him into conflict with Namor and his agents.
![]() | Thunderbolts #105 Civil War
Buy used from: $40.00 TPB not in Amazon. With Wolvie shifting gears per Namor's advice at the end of #45, we return to the T-Bolts with issues 104 & 105 that find them playing both sides of the street. Some members are rounding up villians for the Initiative, some are working on Project 42, and Zemo himself gives Cap a valuable gift (that unfortunately isn't followed up on by Millar when the time comes).
![]() | Black Panther: The Bride TPB (Black Panther (Unnumbered)) by Reginald Hudlin
Buy new: $11.24 / Used from: $1.55 FF 538 is next where cracks begin to appear in Marvel's First Family. Follow that with New Avs 23 where Spider Woman choses sides. Next is Frontline 3-5 where our plucky reporters continue to report on each side of the war and one runs afoul of the Green Goblin (& JJJ) and more details are revealed about Project 42. Follow that with Black Panther 18 for a quick nuptial interlude.
![]() | Civil War (Marvel Comics) by Mark Millar
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $12.49 Next is the first big battle of the Civil War in CW 3 & 4 (read back to back) featuring a bait & switch return and a big casualty (pff). The aftermath of this battle leads to defections on both sides. The day after the first major battle comes the second; the Yancy Street battle, which is recounted from two different perspectives in AmSpi 534 & FF 539
![]() | Civil War: X-Men by David Hine
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $1.95 Frontline 6 follows up on the first big CW battle with Urich & Stark have an interesting altercation. In CW3 Bishop wants to help Tony Stark. In the CW X-Men LS, we find out exactly what he wants to help with. It's by no means required reading from a Civil War aspect (and thus can be skipped), but it does resolve the X Men's status quo that was set during post-House of M's Decimation.
![]() | Civil War: X-Men Universe by Fabian Nicieza
Buy new: $11.19 / Used from: $2.09 Cable/DP 30-32 starts right after CW2 and then overlaps CW 3 & 4. I guess one can assume the events prior to the battle in CW 3 & 4 are flashback, so I'd read these after #4, as they explain how Cable came to choose his side in the conflict. Although, he later defects (!?!) which invalidates the whole thing. I'd just skip this collection entirely.
![]() | Iron Man: Civil War by Brian Michael Bendis
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $4.70 The BP & Storm kick off their honeymoon with a visit to Doom & Latveria in Black Panther 19. In New Avs 24 the Sentry stuggles to find his place in the conflict (who do you trust?). In Iron Man 13, Stark is offered an enticing proposal from the Secretary Of Defense. More Inhumans fun follows when BP continues his honeymoon world tour in Black Panther 20.
![]() | Civil War: Front Line, Book 2 (Bk. 2) by Paul Jenkins
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.46 In Frontline 7 we see an assassination attempt. In Wolvie 46-47, Logan gets even with those truely responsible for Stanford. Head right back to Frontline for 8, 9 & 10 where a traitor is uncovered in the Stark Camp, and our reporters seem to have uncovered the true reason behind this beef with Atlantis (though they don't share it with us quite yet).
![]() | Civil War #5 (Marvel Comics) by Mark Millar
Buy used from: $15.99 FF 540 & AmSpi 535 (read in this order) show two sides of the same coin where Peter struggles to stay in the bed in which he's lain (leading directly into CW5) and also features a guided tour of Project 42. In CW5 we see a major defection from Iron Man's side and then see the defector get his buttskie majorly kicked, then rescued by a surprising ally.
![]() | Civil War: Fantastic Four by J. Michael Straczynski
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $3.79 In FF 541, the Thing heads to France. Next is BP 21, as the honeymoon tour continues with a sit down in Atlantis with Namor. In New Avs 25, Tony is re-offered the SecDef proposal, but from a surprising source (who do you trust?). In BP 22, the honeymoon tour conludes in the US with a vist to Stark. It doesn't go well. In FF 542 Mr. F finally explains his support for the Reg Act.
![]() | Civil War: Marvel Universe by Ed Brubaker
Buy new: $9.59 / Used from: $3.82 A long lost character returns to the MU in "The Return", collected in CW: MU. Next, the honeymoon is over and BP and Storm have chosen their side in BP 23 & 24. Turn next to Iron Man 14 for the last meeting of Cap and Tony before things race to the conclusion.
![]() | Civil War #6 (Marvel Comics) by Mark Millar
Buy used from: $5.95 Now for the difficult portion of our program, BP 25 and AmSpi 536-539. These stories are directly related to the third act and are thus included. However both titles are recaps of CW 5-7 and it's aftermath. And in AmSpi's case, they're full of continuity gaffs, so badly in some cases that it yanks you right out of the story.
![]() | Civil War #7 (Marvel Comics Civil War) by Mark Millar
Buy used from: $12.50 I'd recommend skipping these issues entirely. Reading them, in my opinion, actually dilutes both the ending of CW7 & Fallen Son. I'll get to them later. But first, getting back on track; after IM 14 things come to a head in CW 6 & 7, read back to back, which features an ending that may suprise you.
![]() | Civil War Frontline #11 by Paul Jenkins
FL #11 is the epilogue to the whole shebang where apparently anyone who isn't a 14 year old girl isn't a true American. Despite that nonsense, it does protray a tragic Tony Stark trapped by his own machiavellian machinations. The end, roll credits. Now then...
![]() | Civil War: Amazing Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $5.79 The alternate ending goes: IM 14, AmSpi 536-537, CW 6-7, BP 25, AmSpi 538-539 & then finally FL 11. AmSpi 536 starts out immediately from 535 as does CW5. But it then skips to the middle of CW6 & ends back at the middle of CW5(?!) And it's (and 537 for that matter) told in a linear fashion; this ain't "Pulp Fiction" here.
![]() | Black Panther: Civil War TPB (Black Panther (Unnumbered)) by Reginald Hudlin
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $2.98 AmSpi 537 is written as being prior to CW6 but, the issue consistantly and irreconcilably clashes with it: an unhurt and awake Spidey & the fam lamb it in 537 but Peter's unconcious in CW5-6; the interaction between Peter and Cap is so off I can't even describe it; and, 537 ends as the official lead into (ugh) the middle (?!) of CW6. Next is BP 25, which is CW 7 from Storm's perspective.
![]() | Amazing Spider-Man: Back in Black by J. Michael Straczynski
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $999.99 Wrapping it up before FL 11 is AmSpi 538 & 539, where despite the CW trade dress on 538 and the recap of of the battle in CW 6 & 7 it includes, it's actually all post CW stuff launching Spidey's Back In Black period. He makes a black-clad cameo in FL 11 tying all together.
