| The western foothills of the Sierra are sprinkled with ancient mines, odd little towns with clapboard Victorians and steep, narrow streets, rushing streams, magnificent oaks and pines, terrific old bars and eateries. Lots of lakes, trails, and museums to explore. Wineries, too. State Highway 49 (a.k.a. the Gold Rush Trail) was recently designated a Scenic Byway. It makes a great side trip. Stay in a B&B, taste some great wines, and visit a State Historic Park or two. Here are some books about that kind of stuff. | ||
