Throughly enjoyed.5
A great addition to anyone's library. It is a good introduction to John Calvin or a delightful read for anyone already accustomed to his theology. Calvin is a great hero of the faith not a divisive figure of church history. The humility and pursuit of loving mercy that he proclaims in this set of sermons should contribute to that view, to the glory of God.

Serious Sermons for Life5
John Calvin's commentaries have been with us for ages, but there is a growing movement to print his actual sermons (See Galatians, Ephesians, Job, Prayer, and now the first seven chapters of Acts). This brief book is more powerful than the size indicates. Calvin does not pull any punches in his sermons, you can see why people stood in his lecture hall and sanctuary (I have been there to see where he taught) for an hour to hear him challenge them and why Geneva became a hub of transformed lives. These are no sweet, light-hearted devotions. No, they are challenges to live the Kingdom life now. As I said he pulls no punch. This can bee seen in one sermon where he speaks to other pastors and says that the man of God who pleases everyone is at the same time betraying God. Wow! His point in his sermons is that we who preach, teach, and live the kingdom lifestyle will wind up offending some by our love, our grace, our mercy, our forgiveness, and our convictions. As a teacher and pastor, I know his meaning that if we try and please all people we will wind up denying the truths of Scripture. Calvin shows us the way in this volume to teach and to live the truth and let people either live the Beatitudes or betray God themselves. A very valuable tool for pastors and for families.
