Manufacturer Description

From the solid feel and comfortable grip of one of the world's smallest compact stainless-steel bodies to its large, easy-access control buttons and 2.7-inch high-resolution LCD monitor, the Coolpix S600 is a joy to carry and to take pictures with.

Coolpix S600 Highlights

The world's fastest start-up time in its class Optimized for the one of the world's fastest start-up times, the Coolpix S600 frees you to capture special moments as you experience them. The Coolpix S600 has a start-up time within 0.7 seconds and realizes fast AF.

VR image stabilization Nikon's optical lens shift VR image stabilization compensates for camera shake to produce clearer, sharper results in lower light or unsteady conditions. Active full time, VR's stabilizing effects also aid in smooth, easy framing and shooting.

ISO 3200 capability Light sensitivity range up to ISO 3200 with manual control or auto control (up to ISO 800) creates new opportunities to take sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower light conditions, or to capture fast-moving subjects with outstanding clarity.

Other features

  • 10.0 effective megapixel clarity
  • Active Child mode automatically tracks and focuses on the subject when the OK button is pressed
  • Pastel mode creates a soft, impressionistic image when enabled before shooting
  • Incredible, bright 2.7-inch approx. 230k-dot, wide viewing angle TFT LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating
Coolpix Premium Features

Coolpix in-camera technologies give you the edge when it comes to taking beautiful pictures more easily and with greater enjoyment. Included are innovative functions that increase shooting opportunities in a broader range of situations, help to optimize images, and add a new dimension of fun to sharing those results.

VR image stabilization Nikon Coolpix cameras offer an array of VR technologies that produce blur-free images when shooting in unsteady conditions or at slower shutter speeds. Selected models are equipped with one of two types of Optical VR, Lens Shift VR, which delivers sharp and steady images effective for shooting and faster framing with the LCD, or Image Sensor Shift VR, which moves the image sensor to accurately compensate for camera shake. Other models offer Electronic VR which applies movement data to image processing to turn blurred images into beautifully clear results.

Better pictures in lower light Selected Coolpix models offer ISO capability beyond the range of conventional digital compacts. An exciting advantage that greatly increases photographic possibilities, high ISO capability delivers excellent exposure in challenging conditions, broadens the scope of possible subjects and allows scenes to be captured beautifully without compromising natural light.

Face-priority AF Available only with Nikon Coolpix cameras, the clever Face-priority AF function helps ensure satisfyingly crisp portraits no matter where the subject is in the shot. By automatically detecting people's faces in the frame, the photographer is free to press the shutter for sharp portraits with focus exactly where it's wanted.

D-Lighting Only Nikon delivers the advantage of D-Lighting, a unique technology with the ability to rescue underexposed images or shots taken with excessive backlight. Accessible in Playback mode, this innovative feature automatically creates a copy of the image, adding light and detail added where necessary, while leaving correctly-exposed areas untouched. As a result, images are significantly improved in a manner that is much more natural looking.

In-camera red-eye fix Coolpix cameras offer refined red-eye reduction capability that surpasses other digital compacts. First, a series of pre-flashes stimulate the subject's pupils, causing them to constrict. The camera then analyzes the captured image for the remaining presence of red eyes, automatically correcting them in-camera before saving the image to memory.

Customer Reviews

Fairly good product4
Fairly good product for the price.

Pros: Super fast start up. Intuitive interface. Beautiful outlook.

Cons: not so good auto white balance (but manual works well). Noisy at high ISO (but 200 is fairly good).

Bottom line: nice point-and-shoot small, handy camera. Recommended for shooting daily family photos.

Disappointing Nikon3
Got this camera for the wide angle lens, Nikon name and small size only to be sorely disappointed. The pictures are great, don't get me wrong, and I agree with the other reviews. However, as you can see there are one or two people who rate this camera very negatively. They are right, and I suspect that others who would rank this Nikon very low are just not bothering to write. If your fingers are just the right size I bet you'd find the scroll wheel very handy to navigate all the features. I just find it a clumsy solution to what Panasonic has done so much better. It's difficult to switch modes as you have to use the wheel to identify on the display screen if you want portrait, bright sunlight, no flash etc. You might say that the camera takes care of most of these functions automatically and to a degree you'd be right. Except of course for those situations that you would need this otherwise fast start up camera to listen quickly to what you would want it to do! And here's the other thing: shutter lag. For its extremely fast startup, the S600 is just painfully slow in between shots, something I thought I could live with but that in practice is annoying to say the least. My last gripe is about the battery. If I don't use a camera for a few days I don't expect the battery to drain by itself. That's right, I have taken perhaps 15 pictures, most in broad daylight, then didn't use the camera for about 5 days and the battery was dead, empty, non-responsive. After a recharge the camera came back to life but how do you like that? Back to Panasonic for the wide angle lens. Nikon, shame on you.

Great Camera 5
I have no idea why this camera got so many bad reviews. I find it to be a great camera with awesome features and ease of operation. Pictures are crisp and lusterous in color.
