![]() | Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only - Black)
Buy new: $549.00 / Used from: $375.00 I was told that the kit with the 18-55mm lens isn't worth the price. Instead, folks recommended I use the price difference to invest in better lenses.

![]() | Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens
Buy new: $86.48 / Used from: $84.00 A great lens for portraits. This lens is a great buy to get started with the Rebel XT. It's affordable, light, fast and sharp, and gives you those cool blurred backgrounds for portraits.

![]() | Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $395.26 / Used from: $359.99 I've been told if you can afford only one lens (other than the 50mm), get this one. This mid-range lens is a good, solid choice for a general multi-purpose zoom lens. It doesn't go very wide (45mm equivalent in full frame 35mm terms) but it has a respectable telephoto range (up to 216mm equivalent). It has image stabilization, and it's sharp. It's the lens I have on all the time now.

![]() | Canon 72mm UV Haze Filter
Buy new: $22.74 A small price to pay to protect my 28-135mm lens.
|
![]() | Canon EW78BII Lens Hood for EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Canon SLR Lens
Buy new: $20.20 Recommended for the 28-135mm lens, especially for taking pictures outdoors.
|
![]() | Lowepro SlingShot 100 All-Weather Digital Camera Backpack (Black)
Buy new: $69.95 / Used from: $144.45 Great compact bag that provides quick and easy access to your DSLR. Everything on this list up to this point can be stored in this bag (Rebel XT with 28-135mm lens mounted but lens hood unattached), and then some--I also store my Canon SD600 point-and-shoot and can fit a small vidcam as well.
|
![]() | Canon BG-E3 Battery Grip for EOS Digital Rebel XT Camera
Buy new: $129.88 Doubles the length of your shooting time, provides a vertical shutter release, gives more hand space to grip the camera, and adds some weight to counteract the weight of longer lenses. I hadn't planned on getting this until after I got my 28-135mm lens.

![]() | Canon NB-2LH Rechargeable Battery Pack for Digital Rebel XT/XTi, PowerShot S30/40/45/50/60/70/80, G7 & G9 Digital Cameras
Buy new: $42.62 / Used from: $34.99 It doesn't hurt to carry a spare or two, especially if you get the battery grip.
|
![]() | Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLRs
Buy new: $710.00 The 28-135mm doesn't go wide enough for me so I decided to get this ultra-wide (16-35mm equivalent in full frame 35mm terms) lens next. I decided on this over the 17-40mm for wider coverage and less overlap with my 28-135mm. Things to consider: 1) as an EF-S lens, it may not work with high-end DSLRs if you decide to upgrade; 2) it isn't an "L" lens and won't include a lens hood.
|
![]() | Hoya 77mm UV (Ultra Violet) Multi Coated Glass Filter
Buy new: $44.35 A small price to pay to protect the expensive 10-22mm lens. I ended up getting this over the Canon 77mm UV Haze filter due to the reviews I read. Also, this filter was cheaper.
|
![]() | Canon EW83E Lens Hood for EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Canon SLR Lens
Buy new: $32.70 / Used from: $27.00 Recommended lens hood for the 10-22mm.
|
![]() | Lowepro Slingshot 200 All Weather Backpack (Black)
Buy new: $89.95 / Used from: $80.00 The Rebel XT with the battery grip attached is a tight fit in the 100 AW. With the 200 AW, I can store everything on this list up to this point--the Rebel XT with battery grip, and my 28-135mm or 10-22mm lens mounted with the hood lens attached backwards. And I still have space to store whichever lens I'm not using, and an external flash, if/when I extend my kit.
|
![]() | Canon 430EX Speedlite Flash for Canon Pro1, Pro 90, G Series and all EOS SLR Cameras
Buy new: $237.18 For an external flash, esp. for indoor shooting, I'd get this one.
|
![]() | Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $600.00 The next lens I plan to add is a telephoto lens, I've been debating between this and the 70-300mm. Advantages: "L" lens, quality, sharp, includes lens hood. Still undecided as to what to get but I think I'm leaning towards this one now.
|
![]() | Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras
Buy new: $541.47 Advantages over the 70-200mm lens: lighter & smaller (better for travel), has IS (better for handheld shooting), longer range (112-480mm equivalent in full frame 35mm terms). Things to consider: 1) may not be as sharp or fast; 2) not an "L" lens and won't include lens hood.
|
![]() | Canon UV-1 58mm Haze Filter
Buy new: $6.95 A fairly nominal price to pay to protect the expensive 70-300mm lens.
|
![]() | Canon ET-65B Lens Hood for EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS and DO IS USM Lenses
Buy new: $39.80 Recommended lens hood for the 70-300mm.
|
![]() | Joby GP3-01EN Gorillapod SLR-Zoom Flexible Tripod for Digital SLR Cameras
Buy new: $49.95 It's recommended to get a tripod when using either telephoto lens above, even the 70-300 IS lens. This is a great affordable, compact, light tripod.
|
![]() | Canon Monopod 100 for SLR Cameras & Lenses
Buy new: $33.95 / Used from: $31.00 Another alternative for shooting with a telephoto lens.
|
![]() | Canon Wireless Remote Control RC1 for Digital Rebel
Buy new: $21.21 / Used from: $20.00 Affordable and convenient remote control for the Rebel XT.
|
![]() | Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
Buy new: $1,196.95 This lens would be the most ideal to go along with the 10-22mm and the 70-200/70-300mm lenses. If I ever have the money, I'd trade in my 28-135mm lens for this. Uses the same filter size as the 10-22mm.
|
![]() | Tamrac Adventure 9 Photo/Computer Backpack (Grey/Black)
Buy new: $139.95 / Used from: $124.95 If I ever get everything on this list, the Lowepro Slingshot 200 will probably be a tight fit and may not let me store the Rebel XT with a mounted lens. Thus, this bag is more ideal for carrying this entire kit. It also has space to carry a laptop.
|
![]() | Apple MacBook MA701LL/A 13.3-inch Laptop (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD SuperDrive) - Black
Buy used from: $1,699.99 Great for doing stuff with the (hopefully) great pics I plan to take with my Rebel XT! :D And since the Tamrac Adventure 9 backpack can hold a laptop...well, I'd love to get this. :)
