Books I've Read This Year I (2008)
By an Amazon.com customer
The PromiseThe Promise by Chaim Potok
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.99
Potok's follow-up to THE CHOSEN is not nearly as strong, though interesting from the standpoint of the develop of Judaism after the Holocaust
Infinite Jest: A NovelInfinite Jest: A Novel by David Foster Wallace
Buy used from: $10.99
One of my favorite novels, which I've just finished re-reading. It was better the second time around.
The Executioner's SongThe Executioner's Song by Norman Mailer
Buy used from: $3.26
The fastest thousand-page read I've ever taken on. Mailer takes the omniscient narrative approach to the Gary Gilmore case with fantastic results.
The Willow TreeThe Willow Tree by Hubert Selby Jr.
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $4.73
A swing and a miss. Selby seems to be better off with hard-boiled material. While this book has some of that, it doesn't seem to have enough.
The StrangerThe Stranger by Albert Camus
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $1.99
This is a relatively new "American" translation of the novel, which I last read in high school. It was very good this time around as well; the new translation is quite accessible.
A Theological Commentary to the Midrash - Volume III: Song of Songs Rabbah (Studies in Ancient Judaism)A Theological Commentary to the Midrash - Volume III: Song of Songs Rabbah (Studies in Ancient Judaism) by Jacob Neusner
Buy new: $63.50 / Used from: $52.44
The classical Jewish commentary on the standard text for Passover. Some interesting portions incorporating numerology and wordplay.
Exile and the KingdomExile and the Kingdom by Albert Camus
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.64
Six short stories on varied topics but all in colonial settings. Camus says farewell to imperialism. Brilliant stuff.
Riding Toward EverywhereRiding Toward Everywhere by William T. Vollmann
Buy new: $26.95 / Used from: $0.79
Vollmann's latest confirms his status as the country's great writer -- the closest contender for a Nobel in the next twenty-five years.
Waiting PeriodWaiting Period by Hubert Selby Jr.
Buy new: $12.78 / Used from: $1.00
Kind of an updated rehash of THE ROOM, this was Selby's final novel -- a whimper and not a bang.
The Midrash Rabbah on Megillas EstherThe Midrash Rabbah on Megillas Esther by Feldheim Publishers
Not as tight as other midrashim, though it spends an awful lot of time on the first line of the Book of Esther. From there, it jumps ahead in fits and starts.
The FallThe Fall by Albert Camus
Buy new: $9.36 / Used from: $2.91
Starts slow but ends magnificently.
Eureka: A Prose Poem (Literary Classics)Eureka: A Prose Poem (Literary Classics) by Edgar Allan Poe
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $5.99
Poe calls it a prose poem, but it's really just an essay on astronomy and religion -- and not a terribly accurate one, though it's very, very well written.
The Book of Intimate Grammar: A NovelThe Book of Intimate Grammar: A Novel by David Grossman
Buy used from: $1.00
Not as good as Grossman's first two novels. The concept holds a lot of promise but never really comes to fruition.
Minds Meet (New Directions Book)Minds Meet (New Directions Book) by Walter Abish
Buy used from: $3.50
Some of these experimental short stories are interesting, but they tend to run together and compromise character and plot for dazzle potential.
Happy DeathHappy Death by Albert Camus
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $4.50
A sort of proto-STRANGER culled from his notebooks. Better to read THE STRANGER.
A Theological Commentary to the MidrashA Theological Commentary to the Midrash by Jacob Neusner
Buy new: $65.50 / Used from: $54.00
This was the commentary on what is commonly known as the Lamentations of Jeremiah, a supposed eyewitness account of the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Neusner's analysis of midrash is concise and direct.
The Caine Mutiny: A NovelThe Caine Mutiny: A Novel by Herman Wouk
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $0.74
A good novel that would have been great it Wouk had left out the first hundred pages and the last hundred pages. 300 pages good; 500 pages not so good.
The Possessed by Albert Camus (A Play in Three Parts (translated))The Possessed by Albert Camus (A Play in Three Parts (translated))
Buy used from: $4.38
Camus's adaption of Dostoevsky's novel is moderately successful, though not as much as his earlier plays.
Six Israeli NovellasSix Israeli Novellas by Aharon Appelfeld; David Grossman; Ruth Almog; Yaakov Shabtai; Yehudit Hendel; Benjamin Tammuz; Dalya Bilu (translator)
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $11.11
I picked this up mainly to read David Grossman's novella YANI ON THE MOUNTAIN, but I found some of the other novellas better, particularly Appelfeld's and Shabtai's. Some good stuff.
The Rebel: An Essay on Man in RevoltThe Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt by Albert Camus
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $4.25
A pretty brilliant look at the purposes and uses of political violence, philosophy, and art as forms of revolution.
Blackden (Norton Paperback)Blackden (Norton Paperback) by Duncan McLean
Buy new: $13.00 / Used from: $0.01
McLean is, in my opinion, Scotland's great contemporary writer, but you wouldn't know it from this book. Plodding and slow.
Naked LunchNaked Lunch by William S. Burroughs
Buy used from: $0.75
I re-read this for the first time since college. I still think it's brilliant, though now I see how much the sex overshadows the politics. Still amazing, though.
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering GeniusA Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $1.70
Lives up to its title. A bit uneven here and there (something Eggers readily admits), but lots of out-loud laughs as well as some great stylistic flourishes.
Lyrical and Critical EssaysLyrical and Critical Essays by Albert Camus
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.24
The "lyrical" essays are well written, to be sure, and the criticism, where it is on writers familiar to Americans (i.e., me), is quite good, but there's a lot of dross here as well.
Exodus: The Traditional Hebrew Text With the New Jps Translation (J P S Torah Commentary)Exodus: The Traditional Hebrew Text With the New Jps Translation (J P S Torah Commentary) by Nahum M. Sarna
Buy new: $47.25 / Used from: $40.95
Another very erudite volume from JPS incorporating centuries of commentary with a great translation.
Mumbo JumboMumbo Jumbo by Ishmael Reed
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $0.96
Simply brilliant. Why this book has not cracked the canon of African-American literature is beyond me. It's clever, funny -- even has a bit of DA VINCI CODE mystique thrown in.
One Hundred Years of SolitudeOne Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.99
An epic sweep over 100 years of Colombian/South American history through the eyes of one family. You'll want to use a reader's guide, as nearly all the characters share three or four names at most.
Russian Debutante's HandbookRussian Debutante's Handbook by Gary Shteyngart
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
A very funny book and an amazing effort from someone with English not as their first language.
You Shall Know Our VelocityYou Shall Know Our Velocity by Dave Eggers
Buy used from: $9.95
A brilliant piece of writing. I strongly urge people to read the original edition of this book (without the exclamation point in the title) and *then* read the 48-page addition that is now inserted after p. 250 in the later paperback edition.
Explaining Hitler: The Search for the Origins of His EvilExplaining Hitler: The Search for the Origins of His Evil by Ron Rosenbaum
Buy new: $12.48 / Used from: $2.14
Rosenbaum doesn't end up doing what his title promises, but that's kind of the point. An interesting read.
UpUp by Ronald Sukenick
Buy new: $18.00 / Used from: $10.00
A great first novel by a sadly marginalized writer.
The Four of Us: A PlayThe Four of Us: A Play by Itamar Moses
Buy new: $11.90 / Used from: $1.73
Brand spanking new drama from Itamar Moses offers more proof that he is the future of the American theater.
Mysteries of Pittsburgh: A Novel (P.S.)Mysteries of Pittsburgh: A Novel (P.S.) by Michael Chabon
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $2.57
Chabon's debut novel falls short, but he obviously had more up his sleeve.
CivilWarLand in Bad DeclineCivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $5.68
Saunders's first collection of short stories sets the tone for his later work, but it's not as entertaining.
Requiem for a NunRequiem for a Nun by William Faulkner
Buy used from: $3.00
An interesting hybrid of narrative and drama, by way of a sequel to SANCTUARY.
Resistance, Rebellion, and Death: EssaysResistance, Rebellion, and Death: Essays by Albert Camus
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.50
An interesting selection of essays by the master, although his lack of support for Algerian independence is a bit disconcerting.
In the Future PerfectIn the Future Perfect by Walter Abish
Buy used from: $17.45
These short stories by Abish are more accessible than his early work, though not without the experimental edge.
PastoraliaPastoralia by George Saunders
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $3.95
Saunders's second volume of short stories provides longer work that is a bit more introspective and less in the same tone as his first volume.
The Portage to San Cristobal of A. H.: A Novel (Phoenix Fiction)The Portage to San Cristobal of A. H.: A Novel (Phoenix Fiction) by George Steiner
Buy new: $15.00 / Used from: $7.55
A strange little novel: Hitler is found deep in the Brazilian jungle and given a drumhead court martial for his crimes. He speaks in his own defense in the final chapter -- quite unnerving.
Aalst (Modern Plays)Aalst (Modern Plays) by Duncan McLean
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $5.73
Brutal drama by McLean, reminiscent of Edward Bond's LOST.
