A real step down from our old ProAroma
Noodles' review is just about exactly what I was going to write. Our old ProAroma was a better machine. It's hard to believe anyone at Krups would think it was an improvement to lock out all controls except "off" when the machine is on program mode. You want to change the program? Set the program "off" time longer? You have to turn it off to do that. Then, when you turn it back on to keep the coffee warm, it thinks you want to brew a new pot, and starts an "empty reservoir" alarm. The automatic start program doesn't cancel after it runs, it stays on. Uhhh... Krups? It's obvious that I would have to actively tend to the machine - like add a filter? Coffee? Water? before it makes coffee again. Wouldn't it make sense to assume that I would be capable of setting the program again at that time? Krups thinks you should be forced to remember to turn the program off (not possible when it's still warming the carafe!) if you don't want to use it. If you forget LATER, after the program time has run it's course, it starts the "empty reservoir" alarm nice and early Saturday morning. Our ProAroma was completely programmable any time - and it had more features. This machine is definitely a step down. Oh, wait - I forgot - the carafe has a lid that won't come off, won't open far enough to stay open by itself, and stained brown in a month. How am I supposed to fit this in the dishwasher - with the lid closed? I guess so. I wish the old carafe with the snap-on, snap-off lid would fit this thing. OK, so I got it for $60, much cheaper than the last few (non e-bay) ProAromas would have cost me. But I feel bad that I didn't just spend $20 on Mr. Coffee. I think this machine was not only built in China, it was designed there by someone who had never laid hands on a ProAroma. Coffee is fine, but so is it when I boil water in a kettle and pour it over the grounds in a Melitta filter...this is just handier. The machine feels sturdy, not cheap. My gripe is in the programming. Oh, yeah, I forgot - they moved the electronics back under the heating element, where coffee and water get spilled on it. Not up high like the ProAroma's.

FME2 Features Beyond Reason
Wake up and smell the Coffee - Krups, if your marketing slogan is "Beyond Reason" you created a user interface that meets your company's campaign. Our predecessor to the FME2 died and Krups was kind enough to replace it for free with the evil FME2. Lets start with the Auto On function. You would think you set it the night before to make coffee at 7:00 AM the next morning and that would be all it would do. Nope, "Beyond Reason" means every morning, just like an alarm clock, it attempts to make coffee at 7:00 AM. Glad to see "Beyond Reason" included the Empty Reservoir feature that lights up at 7:01 AM every morning I don't want coffee. The ability to set the features on the machine are also "Beyond Reason". Want to set the clock time, you use the PROG / HR/Min buttons, want to set the Auto On, use the PROG / HR/Min buttons. So how do I set the Auto On and not change the clock time? You have to press PROG briefly, as opposed to holding it for 3 seconds. And what happened to all the good features that were on the old model, gone! It did not make coffee every morning at 7:00 AM, it allowed me to heat the coffee back up by turning on the warmer, it allowed me to adjust the temperature of the warmer, had setting like 3 cup, 4 - 12, and pro. It allowed me to change the time I wanted the coffee to say warm after the coffee was made. It pre-heated the carafe so the hot coffee was not shocked by the cold carafe.
The FME2 also shows signs of cheapness. The new carafe's handle is glued to the side. I'd give it a few months of pouring 12 cups before it snaps off from the glass. The old steel band was better at holding the handle to the glass. The water level indicator already has an air bubble in it so it does not show the amount of water in the reservoir.
As for a basic coffee maker it makes a really good cup, but if you are looking for one with as many features as the old Krups, don't look at the FME2.

Finally, a drip free carafe!
Our household is a serious coffee haven--we generally brew 2 pots a morning (those 1 serve coffee pots would never do!!). This is the first carafe in 6 years that does not dribble coffee on the counter when you pour it into a cup. We love the audible alert, the blue display, temperature of the coffee, & the overall design. We use the programmable feature everyday... no need to reset only fill it up the night before and voila! Coffee... I too wish the white stayed cleaner, but white goes with my kitchen better than the black. Improvements for next model? Add a gold tone filter. Print the max fill line in the water resevoir in black. Hope this one lasts--have gone through 5 coffee pots in 6 years. If it doesn't maybe we should consider a commercial model?!
