Editorial Reviews

From the Manufacturer
Print impressive, laser-quality text and graphics with HP's 74XL Black Inkjet Print Cartridge. This high-capacity cartridge prints three times more pages than the standard HP 74 cartridge. It features the latest ink technology coupled with the superior formulations of HP Vivera inks, all at the right price. This reliable cartridge offers precise everyday printing that includes crisp, clear black text and graphics.

HP's proprietary Vivera ink has been engineered and tested to ensure delivery of a broad range of vivid, lifelike colors, and crisp black text. Vivera ink is also exceptionally pure, so it dramatically reduces print head clogging. This purity, combined with HP-exclusive protectants, guards photos and graphics against airborne pollutants, allowing them to resist fading for decades.

Customer Reviews

An oversized cartridge for people with over-sized needs5
With 18mL it should print out about 750 pages. I have no idea if the numbers I had quoted to me, though, are right. The problem is the little bar that appears whenever you print something hasn't even gone down 25% and I've had this cartridge for almost two months. Its definitely a real wallet saver for me since I'm a student in college and the nearest store selling cartridges is as far away as the nearest cartridge world, which I personally love but haven't gotten to see a lot of recently. Both would've required bus commutes, but the 74XL (which is noticeably sticks out farther than the regular 74 and weighs a whole lot more) has not failed me yet. For now I would encourage anyone lucky enough to have a printer that works with an 18mL cartridge like this to get one. And anyone in the market for a new printer should seriously consider checking to make sure there's isn't only compatible with a dinky 5mL one that will get you around 200 pages before going poof.

Bulk value5
It's worth purchasing the XL version of the HP 74 print cartridge, rather than the standard size. It's three times the size of the standard one, and doesn't cost three times as much.

Also, you can often find package deals including the color (75) XL cartridge and the black XL cartridge for around $60. Buying individual regular size cartridges just isn't a wise idea, considering they often cost around $30. (why buy two regulars for $60 when you can buy two XL's for the same price?)

Just make sure to buy a NEW cartridge, not a remanufactured one. Choose a seller with a high rating and low prices. I purchased a package deal recently through ANTOnline, and was amazed with how fast it came (using only regular shipping).

quantity and price - a win!5
As I mentioned for the HP 75XL inkjet cartridge is the same for this one (black ink only) - get the larger size AND HP brand inks for better quality and to allow for quantity printing. The smaller cartridges just don't cut it in terms of the number of pages it can print before running out. And save by buying it through Amazon, unless you can find a local retailer with better savings - I sure couldn't and am glad I checked with Amazon right away.
