My 5 cats and I recommend the Catit Drinking Fountain!!
My five cats love this fountain! No more trips to the sink to turn on the tap for my feline friends. It's much quieter than the Drinkwells I used to have. I bought two Catit fountains several months ago and I'm very impressed. They really do hold a lot of water. I only have to refill them once a week. Maintainence is a snap! Everything comes apart easily for a once-a-month cleaning (including the pump!)keeping them running smoothly and prevents mold and mineral deposits. The filters are easy to change and inexpensive.

The water flows quietly and smoothly over the dome, provided the fountain is on a level surface. At initial start-up and after refilling it may be necessary to "massage" the dome to break any "static cling" that would prevent smooth-flowing water. The one on the ceramic tile floor is a bit off-level so it doesn't flow as smoothly or as soundlessly as the one on the hardwood floor. But it's a LOT quieter than the Drinkwell fountains. A cushioned placemat underneath the fountains helps catch any kitty-spills and makes the fountains virtually sound-free! I like the bubble design and it doesn't take up much room. I'm very happy with this product.

Would Get 5 Stars However the pump's noise level fluctuates
Before I give my review, I'll explain my 4 star rating. This unit is really well designed, easy to clean and maintain, however, the pump noise fluctuates enough to disturb me a little bit. Even at its loudest though, the noise level isn't all that bad... but when you know it can run whisper-quiet, it's a little frustrating.

So my 8 1/2 year old cat got a bad case of cat acne all of a sudden. This affect his behavior in ways that really freaked me out... one of which is that he stopped drinking water out of the ceramic dishes he had been drinking water out of for his entire life. And on top of that, he became OBSESSED with the sink faucets (both the kitchen and bathroom). He never once even cared about sinks/faucets/dripping water ever before. Not only was I extremely worried about him dehydrating, but I was also worried sick and only sleeping about 2 hours a night because I'd hear him jump up to the kitchen sink, jump down off the counter, run up to the bathroom sink, jump up, jump down and repeat that pattern all night. So we tried closing the bathroom door in hopes it would force him to his drinking bowls... no such luck. All night the pacing would continue with heart-wrenching cries.

It got to the point, where this most loving, social and affectionate cat wanted nothing to do with anyone or anything. Granted he wasn't feeling well because of the acne, but his behavioral patterns/changes were very worrisome. My holistic vet explained that cats, when sick, will always seek out the freshest source of water - regardless if they ever once drank from a faucet or shower before. She recommended getting a drinking fountain.

So I came here and read reviews for the Hagen Catit fountain, the drinkwell and the petmate(?) and decided to get both the Catit and the Drinkwell (the one with the actual waterfall - thinking this would resemble a running faucet the most).

I put the Drinkwell down first. It is considerably louder than the Catit fountain and I think that, combined with the fact he's never seen a drinking fountain before, spooked him out. He wanted nothing to do with it. Then I started to notice an algae bloom the next day in the basin. It wasn't charcoal residue, it was black, furry mold looking stuff. So I took the whole assembly apart and cleaned it thoroughly, including the pump. Less than 18 hours later the bloom was back. So I packed that one up and set up the Catit fountain.

A lot less noise seemed to ease my cat's discomfort with the unit and the water cascading over the entire dome seemed to perk his interest more than the "waterfall" of the Drinkwell. But he still didn't drink from it as far as I knew. I even took a day off of work to stay home to basically see if he ever drank from it. He went about 3 days without drinking from it so of course I began to worry. Against the manufacturer's instructions to remove all other water sources, I kept them available because I didn't want my boy to dry up - which I kept monitoring in those 3 days by picking his skin up between his shoulder blades to see if it "snaps" back into place - which is was, so he was obviously drinking water elsewhere...

I should also mention we have an 8 month old kitten in the house who immediately started playing in the fountain as if it was a toy... but after a day or so, she started to drink out of it, but not enough to cue our 8 1/2 year old to do the same.

So after three days of looking at it with curiosity, he finally approached it and drank from the dome. That's all it took. Now he couldn't care less about sink faucets or the shower or even his ceramic drinking bowls... all he drinks from is the fountain, and he drinks from it more frequently than he ever drank from the ceramic bowls. It appears as though he loves this fountain.

I clean it every weekend, replace the filter every two weeks and I have to say, it is incredibly easy to clean, well designed and cheap to maintain. I believe the extra noise I hear once in awhile is contributed to how the dome is sitting on the base because if I tweak with its position ever so slightly, the noise disappears and the unit runs in pretty much silence. However throughout the night, it may or may not shift back and produce a little more noise. I'll have to work on that somehow.

So the Catit gets my full nod with confidence and if you have older cats, be patient because if my boy took to it, I guarantee yours will too. Now all we have to demand or create (for you entrepeneurs) is a drinking fountain exactly like this one however it contains no plastic. A glass dome and ceramic base for starters... because no matter how dense or hard the plastic is, it will always harbor bacteria more than pyrex-grade glass and/or ceramics. Plus you can put glass and ceramics in the dishwasher to thoroughly clean the unit.

My cats are pleased, and so am I!
I checked out the reviews for all the other cat fountains and when I discovered that they don't filter debris I looked for something better. This is made in Germany, filters water, hair, etc. and is easy to clean. I ordered it direct from Petdirect. My cats were drinking out of my homedic fountain, (I think they thought is was a gift for them!) and it was getting old and hard to clean. They drink a lot of water out of this but it holds 3 liters so that is just one more plus.
