| Animals were hugely important to the Celts, since they relied on them for food, clothing, tools, weapons, etc. It is no wonder, then, that they figured so strongly in the symbolism and mythology of Celtic tradition. The different animals took on different meanings according to their characteristics. For example, the horse goddess Epona was believed to accompany the soul on its journey into death, the stag was associated with Cernunnos, the horned god of hunting, wild animals and fertility, and the wild boar was a symbol of courage, strength and determination (warriors often went into battle wearing a boar amulet for protection). | ||
