About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

Customer Reviews

Don't waste your money on this1
I got one of the Polar FS1 heart rate monitors through my employer's health center. I think it is a complete piece of junk. The strap is very difficult to fasten around your wrist. The chest band is almost impossible to get it to stay on. You attach one side and the other falls off. You go fix that side, and the first falls off. And the reading seems to be wildly inaccurate, telling me I'm at 180 when I am barely breathing hard, while my treadmill tells me I'm at 140. In addition, with no backlight the display is difficult to read. The one button control is extremely inconvenient. Basically, this is a complete waste of money. I'll be donating it to the thrift store. What a waste of money.

Never fails to work4
I own this monitor and it is a great one. I am a Heavyhands trainer, and so I wave my arms around a lot during training. I have tried other monitors, notably the Omron, and they tend to lose contact with the chest strap transmitter unless the watch is held constantly within about a foot of the transmitter. But with my Polar monitor, I'm always swinging my hands above my head and down to the ground, and the heart rate display has never blanked out while exercising. Not once.
The only reason I gave this product just 4 stars is the price listed here. You can find this watch, new in the box, for only $40 at WalMart. I saw one at Sears today, in the clearance bin, for $10.97(!!). I'm going back tomorrow to buy about five of them so I can give them away as presents.
I was lucky to find one for that cheap, but even for $40 this monitor is a steal. Heck, even the former full retail price at Sears, $50, was a good deal.
You can't replace the batteries in these things, which is a drag, but at these prices you can just junk it and buy a new one when it burns out. My last heart rate monitor lasted five years before the batteries burned out.

Just what I wanted5
I was looking for something easy to use. As I have started training and wanting to lose weight, I have needed to manage my heart rate. This is perfect. It belt picks up on the treadmill, and the watch beeps if I am below or above my heart rate zone for weight loss I pre-programed. I would recommend if you need/want to stay within a particular heart rate zone.
