The Chemex Coffeemaker was invented over 60 years ago by German chemist and artist, Dr. Peter Schlumbohm. The simplicity of the Chemex coffeemaker's elegant hourglass shape has been honored for its design by many prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Its functional capabilities are also world-renowned. The Chemex uses a thick paper filter that removes many of the impurities that electric makers allow to pass through, making the coffee much more pure and flavorful. It also brews directly into the serving container for simple decanting and cleaning.

coffe the way it was meant to be made
This is the way to get a truly wonderful cup of coffee. Most auto drip makers don't even come close to the perfect temperature of 195-202 degrees to extract the full flavor of the beans. By using the Chemex and water straight off the boil from the tea kettle I and not only obtain the correct temperature, I can also make sure that all the grinds are being equally saturated, something that auto drip electric coffee makers also fall short of. It takes up no counter space, looks like modern art in glass form, and the handle is so much better than their other models that require trying to grip the wooden collar. The handle stays cool to the touch.
Love my Chemex!
Just want to add my $.02 that this is a great product. The Chemex filters took me a few minutes to figure out as they require folding before you can use them. It's very easy once you figure it out. You just need one of those "Oh!" moments! It makes excellent coffee, but really it doesn't do anything. It basically removes itself from the equation so your coffee is really based on the beans you use, how much coffee, how hot your water is, etc. etc. The best parts for me are that it takes up very little space and is very easy to clean. I was always disgusted with how dirty the typical drip machine would be after 6-months to a year of regular use. Not so with the Chemex. You do have to boil your own water, but as I had a stove top kettle that I already use for hot tea, it was no problem. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better coffee maker for under $30.
The new Chemex with handle is superb.
I agree with everything the former reviewer stated in connection with this Chemex. I only wish that Amazon also carried the larger size--I believe it is 3 to 6 cups, which is even better for the morning coffee I make for myself.
And, as the former reviewer noted, it is a beautiful shape--an esthetic pleaure.
