![]() | The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (w/ Master Quest)
Buy new: $116.95 / Used from: $26.50 Ever since its release on the N64 back in 1998, Zelda OOT has been the Gold standard by which all other action adventure games have been compared. That was 10 years ago, WOW!! This Gamecube release included a master quest with tougher dungeon layouts, and finally freed our poor hands from that horrible N64 controller.
![]() | The Orange Box
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $8.50 Released by Valve in 2007, the Orange Box includes the complete Half-Life 2 series to date, as well as Portal, which has effectively raised the bar on what video games can be. THE CAKE IS A LIE! Half-Life 2 is simply stated, the most immersive gaming environment I've ever experienced. Taking out the Combine and Striders never gets old. Oh yeah, then there's Alyx, Dog and the Gravity Gun.
![]() | Resident Evil 4
Buy new: $69.98 / Used from: $5.99 This 2005 release from Capcom completely reinvented the stale and boring Resident Evil franchise. An amazing over-the-shoulder 3rd person view, combined with awesome laser-guided weapons, terrifying epic Boss battles, and interactive cut-scenes make Resident Evil 4 a truly awe-inspiring game.
![]() | Metroid Prime
Buy new: $49.98 / Used from: $2.00 Aside from Half-Life 2, Nintendo's 2002 revamp of Metroid is the best 1st person shooter I've ever played. The combination of precise shooter elements, awesome Boss Battles, cool puzzle solving, and Samus's patented morph ball make Metroid Prime an incredible gaming experience, with no major flaws to speak of.
![]() | Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.89 This 2006 game from Bethesda/2K has the qualities you'd expect to be considered the Greatest Game of All Time. Graphics, Sound, Storylines, and Combat Controls are all 10/10. Unfortunately, the wonderful positive work is nearly ruined by an illogical, overly-complicated character leveling system, and a fatal animation glitch that WILL END YOUR GAME, if you play long enough.
![]() | Shadow of the Colossus
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $10.17 In this beautifully creative 2005 Sony game, you battle the immense scale and terror of (16) ancient Colossi with only a boy, his trusty horse, his meager sword, bow and arrows. The vast majority of the Boss battles are very enjoyable, but there are 2 or 3 that seemed unfair in level of difficulty. I cannot fathom how any person could have defeated that freaking sandworm without going online.
![]() | Grand Theft Auto IV
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.99 Really a place-holder for the GTA franchise, last year's GTA IV from Rockstar moved the series into next-gen gaming, much like GTA III did for the past generation. The storyline for Nico Bellic and associates is far superior to most motion pictures. Graphics, sound, and car physics are all hyper-realistic, and gun combat has finally been fixed. Top notch.
![]() | Doom Collector's Edition
Buy used from: $27.50 Id's Doom is the grandfather of all 1st person shooters, essentially creating the genre when it was first released on the PC back in 1993, later transferred to the Playstation in 1995. Although the game has not aged well graphically, is still contains in my opinion the most superior level designs ever created in the history of video games.
![]() | Halo: Combat Evolved
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $7.00 It's hard to believe the original Halo is already 5 years old. Bungie's 2003 release was a revolution in 1st person shooters, not only for its outstanding Campaign mode, but more importantly for the online multi-player modes. No single gaming experience was ever more terrifying to me than when Master Chief enters the gigantic Library level, and you suddenly realize The Flood has been unleashed.
![]() | Okami
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $11.99 Okami is the game that Zelda Twilight Princess strived to be, yet came up short. This 2006 Capcom release stars a magical wolf and side-kick that you use to literally draw with your PS2 controller. The Okami world is breath-taking, and there are lots of cool battles and Bosses, but the game is really lacking in difficulty.
![]() | Tomb Raider
Buy new: $122.99 / Used from: $2.23 This game is the reason I purchased the original Playstation in late 1995. Eidos's Tomb Raider was a revelation in 3rd person action-adventure gaming. Remember, this game came out more than 2 years before Zelda, OOT on the N64. Lara's excellent gun play and free-roaming, open-ended environments were always the best aspects of the Tomb Raider series.
![]() | BioShock
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $13.49 Bioshock from 2K Games was my most anticipated game from 2007. The first-half was a truly mind-blowing gaming experience, particularly the first Big Daddy battles at the Fish Market. Unfortunately, the novelty of the Big Daddies and your injectable plasmids wears off in the second half, and the storyline takes a dive into stupidity, particularly if you decided not to save the Little Sisters.
![]() | World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 International
Buy new: $78.97 / Used from: $13.47 I don't enjoy many sports games, because their controls and "randomness" usually anger me too much. Winning Eleven 9, from Konami in 2006, has easily to the most intuitive controls I've ever experienced in a sports game. You the Gamer are always to blame, whether something goes right or wrong. The England national team in WE9 is by far my favorite.
![]() | Final Fantasy VII
Buy used from: $44.95 FF7 was the most in-depth RPG ever created, and games like Mass Effect and KOTOR could only attempt to reach the epic proportions of this game. Released by SquareSoft in 1997, FF7 was probably the pinnacle of the original Playstation. The graphics or sound do not hold up over a decade, but the story and materia management system are as complex as anything current generation games have to offer.
![]() | Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Buy used from: $20.00 Easily the best of the COD series, Activision's 2007 Modern Warfare has a surpisingly intimate story and some of the coolest weapons you will come across in a 1st person shooter. The graphics and sound effects on Modern Warfare are the state-of-the-art in next-gen gaming, no doubt.
![]() | God of War
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $5.49 Krados is a hardcore, brutal, bloodthirsty video game hero, first brought to life in this 2005 classic from Sony. The 3rd person combat controls are nearly flawless, allowing you to fight your way through countless out-numbered encounters. Graphics, sound, and story are all above-average. Level design often lacks creativity, with over-simplified puzzles and too linear a path to follow.
![]() | The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.00 A stunning 1st person gaming experience, the 2004 release of Riddick by Vivendi is probably the single best movie adaptation to a video game. Graphics, sound, gameplay, and story are all top notch. Biggest drawback is that the game is very short. Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick are 2 very under-appreciated Sci-Fi movies.
![]() | F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon
Buy used from: $11.50 This 2006 1st person shooter from Sierra was really a pleasant surprise for me. FEAR does the basic FPS aspects very well, but then adds another level of terror to the action. The solid graphics, solid AI, superb gun sounds, ability to stop time, and frightening in-game ghost effects all work very well. That little girl is pretty terrifying, reminding me of the movie Ringu / The Ring.
![]() | Rez
Buy new: $69.99 / Used from: $19.99 This bizarre shooter from Sega, released in 2001 for the PS2, is quite the psychedelic experience. It is a vector graphic designed shooter, with heavy house techno music. The visuals in Rez are always in perfect harmony with the music, and are completely in tune with your shooting controls. The Rez experience is hard to describe, like many things in life. Trans-vibrator is pretty disturbing.
![]() | Beyond Good & Evil
Buy new: $84.99 / Used from: $9.23 This 2003 game from Ubisoft is an intensely entertaining story of government conspiracy. Jade is a very likeable character, as are her dynamic companions. Beyond Good & Evil would have been much higher on my list, if only the character combat controls were more in-depth, and the confined world more free to explore.
![]() | Mass Effect
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $11.19 Bioware's 2007 Mass Effect is the most recent game I have finished. This RPG is a deep space odyssey, with a compelling story, diverse alien characters, terrific graphics and voice acting. The combat and biotic skills are solid, although not spectacular. Major flaw in the game is that the true freedom of space exploration and level designs are very limited.
![]() | Psychonauts
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $17.18 Psychonauts offers perhaps the best voice-acting and dialog I've ever heard in a game. This 2005 Majesco release is a very fun platforming game, with some mind-blowing level design. There are some cool Boss Battles, but also some terribly annoying spots during some of the platforming sequences, particularly during the Circus level at the end.
![]() | Gitaroo Man
Buy new: $59.98 / Used from: $17.95 Gitaroo Man is simply the most funny, enjoyable rhythm and music game I've ever played. Released by KOEI in 2002, the game has a number of unique songs that stick in your head for quite some time to come. The later songs in the game are the very best, but are also extremely difficult.
![]() | CRACKDOWN Xbox 360 Games - NEW & SEALED!
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $7.50 This 2006 Microsoft release is a superb free-roaming sandbox-style game. You play a Superhero Cop, improving your abilities throughout the game to a point where you can actually jump across the tops of skyscrapers like they are stepping stones. Narrator is awesome, "YOU'RE GETTING STRONGER, AGENT!!" Unfortunately, the storyline missions and boss battles are repetitive, and not very challenging.
![]() | Deus Ex: Invisible War
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $1.54 This 2003 Eidos release on the XBOX is a very stylized Sci-Fi adventure with an engaging storyline. The overall game is not holding up well with time, but the biotic powers and weapons you use throughout Deus Ex definitely do.
![]() | Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Buy new: $114.98 / Used from: $18.48 Proving that Nintendo was not all kid's games, Eternal Darkness release in 2002 marked one of the most terrifying gaming experiences ever seen on any platform. The game's story was fully engaging, albeit the controls rather clunky. Somehow, the cumbersome controls actually added to the "terror" factor of the game, kind of like the old Resident Evil games.
![]() | Gears Of War
Buy new: $35.98 / Used from: $8.99 Gears of War, released by Epic in 2006, is obviously an immensely popular online multiplayer game. The graphics, sound, and gun battles are intense, but the Campaign mode is simply way too short. I take longer than most to complete a game, and it took me and my buddy only about 8-10 hours to complete Gears of War on the "normal" difficulty in Co-Op mode.
![]() | Ico
Buy used from: $35.88 The "sequel" to Shadow of the Colossus, Ico was actually released by Sony in 2001. The environment of Ico is incredibly vast and expansive, so much so that the game almost feels lonely or overwhelming in its scale. If you're looking for a ton of action to excite the journey, however, look elsewhere.
![]() | Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $13.77 First released in 2005 by Lucas Arts, the Lego Star Wars games are fun for all ages. The most fun way to experience Lego Star Wars is playing through the Co-Op mode with your friend or family member. The game is very true to all 6 of the original movies.
![]() | Indigo Prophecy
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.59 The 2005 Atari release Indigo Prophecy is less a tradition video game, and more of a "Choose Your Own Adventure" type story. The story is terrific and very deep, and there are some inventive mini-games and cut-scene interactions. I never felt truly immersed in the gaming experience due to the lack of actual control of the character.
![]() | Kameo: Elements of Power (Platinum Hits)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.84 Kameo was an original Microsoft 2005 release for the 360. The characters and creature transformations are very cool, but some are pretty worthless compared to others. The game environments are beautiful, but feel very linear and confined.
![]() | Fight Night Round 3
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.98 This 2006 EA Sports boxing game is truly state-of-the-art as far as incredible graphics and sound. The control of your punches via the right analog stick is very fluid. The career mode is very enjoyable, although the opponents tend to get repetitive.
![]() | Guitar Hero (Bundle with Guitar)
Buy new: $141.99 / Used from: $28.97 The Guitar Hero series has become very trendy in gaming, and this 2005 package released by RedOctane is what started it all on the PS2. Although "fake" playing a plastic electric guitar is very fun, I prefer messing around with the real thing, as horrible as I may be at it.
![]() | Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Buy new: $25.00 / Used from: $3.18 Lost Planet, released in 2006, features some very cool mechanized suits that you do battle in over the frozen landscapes, and more Boss Battles than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately, Capcom really detracted from the game experience by making 3 or 4 of the Boss Battles nearly impossible to beat for the casual gamer, ala Ninja Gaiden.
![]() | Soul Calibur 2
Buy new: $76.99 / Used from: $3.67 Fighting games usually escape my interest, but this 2003 Namco release on the GameCube stars the one and only Link, and in the realistic style and animations we expected to get in the Zelda Wind Waker game.
![]() | Burnout 3 Takedown
Buy new: $66.95 / Used from: $3.22 This 2004 EA game is the only racing game that I've ever been able to really get into, mainly due to the stylized car effects, insane speed, and impressive crash physics.
![]() | Assassin's Creed
Buy new: $19.49 / Used from: $13.62 An ambitious game with astounding graphics, sound, and character animations, this 2007 effort from Ubisoft falls flat in the gameplay and story departments. Your control over the main character never feels fluid, like you are always fighting with the controller. The story is very compelling, but ends far too abruptly, without resolving the main conflict.
![]() | Peter Jackson's King Kong
Buy new: $15.87 / Used from: $0.01 One of the few Movie-to-Game adaptations that was a big success, Ubisoft did a great job with this 2005 release. Some of the battles with the dinosaur raptors are better than the N64 Turok games. Playing as Kong is awesome, but the sequences where you do so are not long enough.
![]() | Red Dead Revolver
Buy new: $57.99 / Used from: $3.42 Very cool and stylized western game released by Rockstar in 2004. Although the gun combat is solid and offers some exciting moments, the overall story lacks depth, and the "quick draw" mini-game is absolutely awful.
![]() | ESPN College Hoops 2K5
Buy new: $14.79 / Used from: $0.01 NCAA hoops at its finest, player controls are very tight. Mike Patrick and Jay Bilas are awesome as the announcers. 2003 Syracuse Orange = Greatest College basketball team of all time.
