Customer Reviews

Aweful Computer and aweful company1
I have owned 3 Dell computers, 2 laptops and a desk top (the Dell XPS). After both Dell laptops I purchased, I told myself I would never purchase another Dell computer again. However, I made the mistake of purchasing the Dell XPS one computer last February.

We received the computer and a week later it overheated and shut down. We were never able to turn her on again. So we called Dell "customer service" (I use the term very loosely). This process took hours to locate an individual who could assist us and then we went through hours of painful computer repair where my husband and I turned on/off the computer, took the back off, took out the mother board, etc (in order for Dell to honor their warranty you are required to go through this charade). Nothing worked.

As such, a technician was sent to our home to work on the computer. He arrived and brought several computer pieces with him, including a mouse, a keyboard, a motherboard, a new monitor, etc. The technician was not able to fix the problem and left. (Please note that the technician left all computer parts, empty boxes and trash lying around our house and did not take it with him).

We spoke to Dell again and were provided with a new computer to replace the broken one. In total this process took 2 weeks.

We received our new Dell XPS and turned it on, set it up and started to use it. The following morning, the computer began to make a funny noise, shut down and never turned on again. We called Dell again to speak with a customer service agent. However, this time we could not get anyone to speak with us or help us for several calls. Finally, we found someone who said they could assist us. Once again we had to turn off/on the computer, take the back off, take out the mother board, etc (a process which again took several hours but is required so Dell will honor the warranty).

Again the computer never worked and so the technician was called again. It took 2 weeks for the technician to come to our house. Once there he again brought all his trash with him and left it there (my husband and I shipped the Dell computer pieces the technician left in our house back to Dell on our own dime). He could not fix the computer and recommended to Dell that a replacement be sent.

However, getting a replacement for the second broken computer Dell sent us was no easy task. We were told a new one would not be sent and that there was nothing wrong with the second computer which was sent. Finally, after a few rough calls we were provided with the 3rd replacement computer in mid-April.

Complaints were filed with the federal trade commission and better business bureau to which Dell responded stating that this never happens and their computers are top notch.

Last week, my Dell XPS stopped working again. When I purchased this computer (in February 2008) I also purchased a 2 year warranty. So once again my husband and I called Dell to have them help us fix the computer (yet again). We spent hours speaking with Dell and working on the computer from home to finally be told we needed to purchase roughly $200 of equipment to fix the computer.

We have owned this computer for 13 months and it has worked for maybe 10 of those months. I would NEVER recommend this computer on my worst enemy. It is forever broken, Dell is not willing to honor their warranty and just fix it. Instead they have their customers do their work for them. Overall the computer just sucks.

We are purchasing a MAC later this week. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM DELL EVERY AGAIN AND WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANYONE AND EVERYONE AVOID THIS COMPUTER AT ALL COSTS.

Imac is better for the money1
This system is not worth anywhere near 1700+ dollars, it's good sure but not 1700 dollars good. For that price it's better to get an Imac with reliable quality hardware and if you want windows use bootcamp it runs flawlessly.

Excellent PC at a great price5
Some time ago we bought a Dell Inspirion with an AMD processor which only worked for a few months. Finally, after some time and trying to diagnose all kinds of problems, I installed a NVIDIA graphics card and now this baby works fine, ... but I would not recommend a Dell with an AMD processor, ... only go with Intel.
Anyway, we've been using Dell XPS PCs since the mid-90s and these are excellent machines. Some of them have worked fine with minimal upgrades for 10 years. Finally, bought the Dell XPS 420 with the quality Intel processor last Christmas and it's awesome with lots of connectivity (plenty USB ports, SD cards, firewire, etc.), speed and capacity at a real good price (bought ours at a Wal-Mart special with a 19" for around $900), ... and it's truly a quality machine.
