Amazon.com Product Description
Designed to prevent frozen or stuck bits from slowing down your woodworking projects, the Porter-Cable 42999 allows the collet and collet nut to be removed as one unified unit, helping to prevent lost bits. This handy tool offers two helpful functions: it can be used to replace lost collets or to convert 1/2-inch bits to 1/4-inch bits, so you can use them with your 3 1/4-HP Porter-Cable router. The 42999 is compatible with the following Porter Cable Routers: 690, 691, 692, 7518, 7519, 7529, 7537, 7538, and 7539.

1/4" collet for PC 75185
Unfortunately, the Porter Cable 7518 router only includes a 1/2" collet. This 1/4" self-releasing collet allows the woodworker who already purchased 1/4" bits to use the older bits in the PC 7518, saving the cost of purcashing new 1/2" bits. This collet fits in all Porter Cable 690 router series as well. If you've ever delt with a frozen router bit, you'll appreciate the self-releasing feature.

If you need one, your really need one...3
I have no idea why Porter-Cable doesn't include one of these with the their 75xx series routers. I admit that the big routers would overpower most really delicate bits, but there are too many bits that are almost impossible to find in 1/2" size. Since my 7518 is the router in my router table, this collet is an absolute requirement.

Enough complaining. The good news is that the 1/4" collet is inexpensive and easily available. It works perfectly, of course, and is as solidly built as you would expect from a Porter-Cable professional tool. It also fits the 6xx series routers, in case you misplace one. So if you are like me and have four routers, you need one for backup in any case

Does the job fine5
Works great, if you need it, get it, no problems. Works in all of the Porter Cable Routers that I have. Zero complaints and I always find every little design flaw.
