Attractive stylish red netbook with quality features!5
(Entire review typed on S10):

[...]

I ordered this netbook direct from Lenovo. It was my first Lenovo purchase and I always wanted to own an IBM/Lenovo PC! The red color was irresistible; I knew which one I wanted! I was torn between this Lenovo S10 and the Acer Aspire One; really torn! The Lenovo won for me because of the styling as I did not want to have an oversized battery hanging off the back. The Acer did have better battery life but I just wasn't sold while reading reviews that the Acer's trackpad was annoying to use*; that was a make or break deal for me. Given I didn't want to attach an external mouse to an extremely portable netbook, I went with the S10. Plus the Acer had a glossy screen and that could be annoying for some.

Pros:
- -Style!! What a beauty. Red glossy outside, white pristine inside. Sleek. Modern. Looks finished and perfected. I like the battery/center tube design. Simple, not cluttered buttons.
-Netbook is firm, doesn't flex. Doesn't feel cheap.
-Keyboard is smaller but is very usable & I got used to it in a couple days.
-Trackpad is much better than I expected, mouse buttons are CRISP and easy to use.* Buttons are side by side and firm. I've never attached an external mouse!
-The S10's screen is matte, not glossy, which makes it easy to view in all lighting.
-"One Touch" restore button. As this doesn't ship with XP CD's, you touch the button and you can restore to a save point as long as you set that up previously (I'd save to external hdd).
-2 USB & Express Slot give versatility. Why would I need 3 USB? I am glad they varied the ports.
-No battery hangs off the back of the unit, like other unsightly units. This looks very finished for a netbook.
-Function button plus brightness and audio volume buttons are so easy to use. I used them the first day with no manual. I love where they put these controls!
-Webcam gives you options and I am glad they included it.
-Speedy machine: even during virus scans and multiple programs, it held it's own. It works fine with Yahoo! Chat.
-Extremely portable. Netbook weighs 2 lbs 11.6 oz. with battery installed. I'd say once you go over 3 lbs. your chance of bringing it somewhere on a whim goes down. (A couple days after I placed my order, Lenovo offered the high-capacity S10 with longer battery. But of course that adds to the price and weight of the unit.)
-Tech support for a few random questions was very good. They were very helpful and didn't rush my questions. (Standard 1 year warranty and tech. support).

Cons:
-The only con for me is that battery life could be better, but my old Compaq barely got an hour. You can't have everything! This S10, depending on settings, can run 3 hours with the wireless on, on Low Mode. I tried it on `Super energy saver mode' but it turns off the wireless and audio and that wouldn't work for me! Maybe for someone typing a document only. The other thing is why would I want 8 hrs. battery life? Unless I am at work on it, I really shouldn't be on the PC 8 hours straight.
-Minor con for some, obviously because of the screen size and resolution, you may have to scroll a little more on the screen, but for the size/weight of the unit, this was expected.

NOTES:
-I ordered it with the Caselogic LNEO-10 neoprene sleeve with handles and it fits beautifully. Ironically, the inside of this case is also red!

-Just to be safe I upped the RAM to 2.5gb. It comes with 1 GB installed (512MB soldiered and 512MB removable stick). I replaced the 512MB removable with a 2GB stick and it works just great. Windows only recognizes 2GB in XP.
-Lenovo offers a 6 cell battery, but so far I think I'm fine with the 3 cell. Ebay has 9 cell's but who knows; they're fakes. (The higher capacity batteries will hang off the back.)
-Expect to copy an install CD to an external HDD or other PC and then transfer it to the S10 as it has no optical drive. I installed Office that way and it's easy to do.

Conclusion:
This is a highly stylish mini PC/netbook with a solid feel throughout. There's so many choices in this price point ($350-450) it's very hard to choose. The styling, brand, and quality really spoke to me. Previously to get something like this would have cost $2000 for a mini super portable PC, so I am in love and I use it daily. I bring it throughout my home and would definitely bring it outside the house, given it's price. If you need a unit to last 8-9 hours at work without A/C, then I'd go with something else. But even the power cable is small and portable. I am very happy with it!

Update 7-8-2009: After having Windows crash so many times a day on the netbook that it made me not want to use it and after having 4 different internet browsers constantly crashing, I decided to install Ubuntu Linux for Netbooks on there and it has been exceedingly fast, stable, and easier to use! I highly suggest it!!

RECEIVED DEFECTIVE FROM BEACH CAMERA-FOLLOW THE BLOG1
I purchased the 160Gb version of this laptop from BEACH CAMERA, which arrived defective. It powered up once and then displayed a screen stating that "something was wrong with the hard drive and needed to be taken for repair before use." It has never powered up again.
It has now been ELEVEN days since this arrived, and despite numerous calls and emails to BEACH CAMERA, I have been unable to speak to a single representative, nor have they answered any of my telephone messages-despite their having given me a telephone number for their corporate offices.
They have sent a couple of emails that only contained canned responses from "ibahary," such as have "we not received your return", sort of thing, highlighting the fact that he never read my email on the firsthand. Their emails have never made an attempt to open dialogue that may assist toward resolving the problem.
This has been a frustrating and expensive mistake to purchase the Lenovo from BEACH CAMERA, who now has my $500 and I have a piece of their junk.
They are finished with you and good luck reaching them after the sale.
Their company reviews seemed mostly favorable, so I remained hopeful that we would reach a resolution soon, however, that has absolutely not been my experience. No response and no remedy offered at any time from BEACH CAMERA.
I will continue to make the updates available as they occur, and you may learn of my experience before you decide to purchase this particular netbook or from this vendor, your call.
UPDATE; Amazon reimbursed with the A-to-z guarantee after nearly 2 weeks of no response from BEACH CAMERA.
