SCOTT TOWELS ARE BACK!
It has been going on 20 years since Scott was as good as Bounty and this is finally IT. Bounty prices have gone through the roof. Nearly catching up to Viva's with their eliminating nice big rolls and selling only annoyingly small ones which need changing every few hours. These new Scotts feel good. Look pretty. Are indeed strong when wet. Absorb oils from hands decently. The BIG BEEFY ROLL lasts me (I spill everything) days! WELCOME BACK SCOTT. It's not cloth-like, like Viva but it is a very good product for its purpose. Now if the price would drop for both these whites and for prints the world would be a better place... The toilet paper, that's still no good.
Best Value on Amazon.com
Because I am insane, I decided to break down the actual costs of the paper towels that Amazon.com offers. It is hard to tell because of varying roll lengths, sheet sizes, and case quantities. In the end, I found them cheaper elsewhere, but if you are an Amazon loyalist and/or like Subscribe & Save, you may be tempted to order them anyway. [Subscribe & Save discount shown in brackets.]
Cheapest per foot (most accurate measure of value):
SCOTT LONG ROLLS (case of 16) = $2.54 /100ft [$2.16 /100ft]
Cheapest per sheet with "regular" size (10"-11") sheets:
SCOTT LONG ROLLS (case of 16) = $2.32 /100 11" sheets [$1.98 /100 11" sheets]

[...]If it were up to me, I'd have all my non-perishable items sent to me in bulk via auto ship. Less gas wasted on trips to the store and less time in the grocery store picking up the usual basic essentials means I have more time to do more important things, whether that's picking out a good tomato, spending time with loved ones, or having my tires rotated.
At the time of this review Amazon currently has 9 different types of paper towels available on auto ship (5 full size sheets, 4 "half" size sheets). I've tried 8 of these and review them all (including the item being sold on this page) in cost order below, lowest to highest price. I also include direct links in Amazon, to the products I compare, so you can go directly to it and buy if you wish.

Foot Notes
STRENGTH & ABSORBANCY:
Like most people, I use perforated paper towels for general household chores. I'm not using them to soak up a huge puddle of water created by a leaky pipe, or scrubbing my floors, or cleaning my car engine with them - 99.99% of the time I'm using them to wipe up typical household spills, to do general cleaning, and wipe my hands. If you need anything stronger, or with more absorbency than the average paper towel, then you should be using a true cloth, not paper. To those who worry the average paper towel is not "tough enough" for the job or if you're worried it won't absorb enough, my advice is to keep some 100% cotton bar rags or old shredded cotton clothes or bath towels on hand for more heavy duty jobs then wash and reuse. This way you save money and you save trees. Think, do any of us really use one single paper towel until it's soaking wet? No, the average spill the average person uses a paper towel for is so small the difference in absorbency from paper towel to paper towel is minimal. And let's not forget the whole "tough enough" and "uber absorbent" angle was thought up by an advertising team who is trying to make money off the consumer, period.
SOFTNESS:
Do I care if my paper towels are scratchy on my skin? No. Unless you're wiping the face of an infant or sensitive toddler, or have a medical condition that causes your skin to be ultra sensitive, I don't think scratchiness matters in a perforated household paper towel. Whether or not your paper towel gets the job done at the right price, and in doing so doesn't wreck the environment, should be the only things that matter. I have no children in the house and I'm not afraid of the so-called roughness of a paper towel, so when comparing the average perforated paper towel, how soft it is doesn't really matter to me. Please also see final thoughts (on strange fibers) for more notes on roughness.
TEARING ALONG THE DOTTED LINE:
Like many people I do find it a bit annoying when a paper towel doesn't tear perfectly along the dotted line each time. But it's the up-tight anal retentive control freak deep inside me that cares about this, not the laid-back intellectual trying to save-a-buck tree-hugger I really am or aspire to be. When it comes down to it, in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter if there's a little tail hanging from the edge of my paper towel roll now and then. In fact, I welcome it because it forces me to stop being so anal retentive about such ridiculous things. We should save such pickiness for more important matters. And I guarantee you Bounty & Viva doesn't tear on the dotted line each and every time either. I know, I've tried them both. I use to be a Bounty addict. My personal opinion and comment to those who complain any paper towel doesn't tear along the dotted line is this - oh please, there are more important things in life to worry about and spend your money on. And who are these people that care so much about even tearing anyway - Martha Stewart wanna-be's or those who think they're the "real" housewives on TV? Let's get our priorities in order people.
PRINT VS WHITE VS NATURAL:
It's bad enough our society feels the need for a bleached white paper towel that's only purpose is to be dirtied and thrown out, but to add insult to injury on our wallets and the environment I'm appalled to think people still buy printed paper towels. Prints use dies, so you should stay away from them, for the sake of your own health, your family's health, and the environment. If you need pretty patterns to dress up your kitchen get a nice set of long lasting cloth towels made of 100% cotton or hemp, or some pretty curtains, or a table cloth. There is no logical or practical need to having printed paper towels you're just going to throw away after one use. Printed paper towels were made for one reason only - to get you to spend more money on a particular company's paper towels over another, to create a ridiculous competition between manufacturers over whose prints are cuter. We aren't living in the 50's any longer ladies (and gents), our society is much more consumer & health savvy than we use to be. We don't need prints. Natural is best, white if you must, but enough with the printed paper towels already.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I hate that I do it, but I do use a lot of paper towels. I'm cutting down more and more (using reusable cloth as much as possible), but right now if I add together my daily usage as well as how much I use during my spring and winter cleanings, it's a lot. I use to be a devoted Bounty select-size user (and I tried Viva and Brawny, just once), until I reached the age of reason and realized the money I could save on paper towels each year by using a cheaper brand could pay for more fresh organic fruits and veggies for me and my husband, or my car insurance, or could buy one new large appliance every year, or could be put to better use paying for doctor bills, vacations, and about 1000 other things I can think of. So unless the paper towel you choose is made with some strange fiber that gives it the feel and absorbency of wax paper or plastic (there are few out there, mostly at the 99 cent stores) keeping it from doing a good job at basic clean up, my review and opinion is we should all be using which ever paper towel is cheapest and does least harm to the environment. For now, of all of the above, I prefer and continue to use Scott Paper Towels, Long Lasting Rolls 4-Pack (Case of 4) and hopefully one day soon Scott will offer us an unbleached recycled version at the same value or better.
