By an Amazon.com customer
Are You My Mother? Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman

This is such a sweet book. The little bird is so earnest and determined and bravely faces challenges.
The Monster at the End of this Book (Big Little Golden Book)The Monster at the End of this Book (Big Little Golden Book) by Jon Stone
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.00
This story is so suspenseful and well-drawn and it's fun to do the voices. We use it at mealtime with the little ones to encourage bite of a new food -- we'll turn the page after you take a bite...
I Love You Stinky FaceI Love You Stinky Face by Lisa Mccourt
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.50
This is great for more "do you love me no matter what?" type of reinforcing. The answer is, yes. Boys love to hear that.
The GruffaloThe Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.97
A babysitter brought this over one day to read, and she did the greatest Gruffalo voice, and the kids just LOVED it! So we got our own copy and now I do the voices, too. Even first-and second-graders like to have this read aloud to them. It's FUNNY!
How Are You Peeling? (bkshelf) (Scholastic Bookshelf)How Are You Peeling? (bkshelf) (Scholastic Bookshelf) by Saxton Freymann
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.21
Amazing what you can do with supermarket produce! A creative way to name emotions and make them normal and funny. It's great to have the kids make their own "worried" face on the worried page, or frightened, or angry, or show them *yours*.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of AnythingThe Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.55
Get the hardcover -- you are going to want to keep this for many years! Read this aloud and act out the clomp-clomp, wiggle-wiggle actions. At the end of the sequence, you get to yell BOO really loud! It's our favorite fall book, even up into grade school. It's darling. And there's nothing to fear!
Danny and the Dinosaur 50th Anniversary Box Set (I Can Read Book 1)Danny and the Dinosaur 50th Anniversary Box Set (I Can Read Book 1) by Syd Hoff
Buy new: $10.25 / Used from: $5.51
The dinosaur is a friendly critter. No post-modern junk, no intrusive science (millions and millions of years ago...), just a lark. This is a fun book.
The Scarecrow's HatThe Scarecrow's Hat by Ken Brown
Buy new: $11.48 / Used from: $9.67
Get what you want without complaining, griping, or throwing a fit. Get the satisfaction of a job well-done. GREAT for kids to learn.
Llama Llama Red PajamaLlama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
Buy new: $9.93 / Used from: $9.30
As soon as your child can find the humor in loud noises, I recommend this book. Get it, and do the voices -- plain voice, raised voice, complaining voice, hushed voice, wailing voice -- it is a terrific choice for showing off emotions and loving parents.
Sylvester and the Magic PebbleSylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig
Buy new: $15.29 / Used from: $2.88
Magic wishes are exciting. Magic pebbles are exciting. But in the end, our family doesn't need magic wishes. We have everything we could want right here, just being together. That's the message of the story. It instills confidence in your child that he or she is loved -- loved bigger than big.
The Polar Express Twentieth Anniversary EditionThe Polar Express Twentieth Anniversary Edition by Chris Van Allsburg
Buy new: $23.10 / Used from: $18.69
So much better than the movie. It's not really about Santa. It's about innocence. And it's a beautifully illustrated book.
The Velveteen RabbitThe Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
Buy new: $12.95 / Used from: $0.01
I love this story from my childhood. But I always found the illutrations kind of scary in my old version (which I still have). Those three-color woodblock illustrations were hard to decipher and the red looked a lot like blood. This is a retelling (and simplifying) of the story line, the love of a child for their favorite toy.
Wacky Wednesday (Beginner Books(R))Wacky Wednesday (Beginner Books(R)) by Dr. Seuss
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.01
Once they start reading, what will they love? If you are like me, you will try any early reader published, just to keep them reading. Most early readers are... junk. Wacky Wednesday combines silly "what's wrong with this picture" with easy words and laugh-out-loud counting fun. It's hard to beat Dr. Seuss.

This is a confidence-inspirer. Prairie kids get a letter from their dad, with a map, and they have to follow the map 150 miles to their dad's new homestead. Really excellent pioneer story.

Mrs. Piggle-WiggleMrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $0.01
This is so much fun for parents to read out to children. It is full of laughter and the moral of the story is wrapped in humor. Great for reinforcing how proud you are of your child.
The Trumpet of the Swan (full color)The Trumpet of the Swan (full color) by E. B. White
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.72
By the same author as Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little. The talking animals interacting with humans makes for fun read-alouds. Louis is a little swan who overcomes adversity -- being born without a voice. We have had many giggly conversations about how swans don't have lips. This is a memorable and companionable book.
The Secret Garden (Unabridged Classics)The Secret Garden (Unabridged Classics) by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.79
A great story about ornery behavior, action curing depression, and friendship despite adversity. Read it out loud to them -- it's wonderful! You get to do the accents a little.
The Mouse and the MotorcycleThe Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary
Buy used from: $4.97
Beverly Cleary is wonderful. Any of the Henry books are wonderful, and this one about a mouse's exciting adventures (despite his worrying mother) is completely engaging. I think there's one "shut up" in it. I change that to "hush."
Bartlett & the Ice VoyageBartlett & the Ice Voyage by Odo Hirsch
Buy used from: $0.19
Your kindergarteners and up will like when you read this to them. There is no "bad guy" -- mostly a race against time. All the main male characters demonstrate sensible, manly (and boyish) behavior. This is RARE in literature, and therefore to be highly prized. We have liked all these Bartlett books -- Ice Voyage is the first.
