Elegant, but maybe not quite as elegant as the alternative
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3R729EW7FZCD0 The Diamond MSP100R Mini Rockers Mobile Speakers are capsule speakers that fit together magnetically. If you twist the top of each speaker it will expand, thus increasing bass. The speakers connect to one another via a retractable cord that's hidden in the base of one of the speakers. On the other speaker there is another retractable cord that will plug into your music player. A third cable that comes with the set is used for charging the speakers when their battery is low (as indicated via a blue/red light on one of the speakers). This cord plugs into a USB port on one end and one of the speakers on the other end. (You can still play music while charging the speakers.)
If this sounds confusing, it sort of is. There are at least two cords to deal with every time you want to hook the speakers up, and a third cable that you're responsible for not losing. In theory, having retractable cables fitting snugly into the base of the speakers seems like a good idea. However: (1) It increases the height of the speakers; (2) the cords may be perfectly strong, but they seem worryingly insubstantial, as if a good tug might break them; and (3) I worry that with repeated use the plastic pull things that cover the cables when they're retracted will break.
I'd like to contrast these speakers with another pair to which I have access, the IHOME Rechargeable Mini Speakers for iPods (Black), which are very similar in design:
-- The most significant difference for me between the iHome and the Diamond speakers has to do with the cords. As described above, the Diamond speakers require three cords to do their job, two of which are retractable. By contrast, the iHome speakers come with a single, cleverly designed cord that (1) connects the speakers to one another, (2) connects them to your music player, and (3) plugs into your computer's USB when needed. Thus there's no fiddling with multiple cords and no worries about breakable parts.
-- To my ear the speakers sound very similar to one another, though the Diamond speakers may have a bit more bass. More discerning listeners may have a problem with either or both speakers, but both sound fine to me.
-- Both the iHome and the Diamond speakers are small and elegant, with a silky feel to their exteriors. The Diamond speakers are taller than the iHome speakers, however, and to my mind slightly less aesthetically appealing (because there are more inputs on their sides and more writing), though this is a wholly subjective assessment.
-- The Diamond speakers come with a volume control while the iHome speakers do not. This may not matter to a lot of people, but it could be an added convenience for the Diamond speakers.
-- The Diamond speakers, at least as currently priced, are about $13.00 cheaper than the iHome.
-- The Diamond speakers come with a nicer carrying case than the iHome speakers.
Innovative Design with Cool Features but...
These speakers are very cool for what they are and they've clearly put a lot of though into this. Just don't expect booming sound cuz it isn't scientifically possible. Deep, rich sound needs large coned speakers and solid casings to help reverberate. But don't get me wrong, these have decent sound for the class they're in so I'll review them on that level.
What I like most about the Mini Rockers is the design. The whole unit is a bit bigger around than an empty toilet paper roll and a little shorter. The first thing I noticed is the feel of the Rockers. It's kind of velvety to the touch which gives it an elegant feel. I think it's a subtle rubber coating or something, not sure. Whatever it is, I like it. It makes the unit feel nice in the hand and the shape and size is perfect too.
The Rockers are held together magnetically and split apart in the middle to separate into 2 stereo speakers. This in itself is very cool. Most portable speakers meant for travel are mono and I expected these to be the same. So it was a nice surprise to split them apart into proper stereo separated speakers. That right there beats all pocket size portable speakers I've tried.
The speakers connect to each other via a built in mini USB cable. Mini USB connectors are supposedly becoming standard for cell phone chargers and it looks like they'll have other applications as well. The USB connector is retractable and neatly tucks away into the speaker body. The same is true for the stereo jack that plugs into your laptop, ipod or whatever.
Both the retractable USB and stereo plugs are neatly hidden away into the speaker body and have an attached end cap that hides the fact that they're even there. This is a very nice touch, but it's also one of the things that concerns me. To pull out the USB and stereo plugs, you have to tug on these tiny end caps and I'm wondering if they'll hold up over time. Also, retractable cords are notorious for breaking over time. But so far so good and the clean look helps pack up the speakers and wires neatly for travel.
The only other connection is the mini USB charging cable. It plugs into your computer to charge the battery inside the speakers. The charging cable also has a pass through connection that enables you to listen to music while charging but you can only use one speaker when charging since the connector that links the speakers together will be connected to the charger instead of the other speaker.
A final cool feature of these speakers is the Retractable Resonator. Basically, you hold the tops of the speakers and turn and an accordion sort of thing pops out separating the speakers form the body about an inch. It's pretty neat and helps the speakers vibrate more freely and improves the sound somewhat. Neat as it is, its also another slight cause for concern as far as wear and tear over time. Will the Retractable Resonator keep locking and unlocking as it should? Only time will tell.
Overall, the speakers do feel pretty solid so there's no reason to think they wont last but all these little hidden features are stress points and potential failure points so it's fair to wonder about product longevity.
The sound itself is just decent. Don't buy these thinking you're gonna fill a room with sound. My laptop speakers have a deeper, richer tone, but don't go as loud as these Rockers. But the Rockers have more of a tinny sound. The high ends are crisper but the lows are pretty much non existent. At least when compared side by side to something that does have deep lows.
When I plugged my cell phone into the Rockers, I could barely hear the music and the high ends were still distorted. But I blame that more on my phone's capability than the speakers, though it would be nice if the speakers had a boost button or something since many portable devices play music notoriously low absent headphones.
Overall, these are decent sounding portable speakers. The design is impeccable. And I do have concerns about wear and tear. Taking all that into account, I gave it four stars.
Bottom Line: these Mini Rocker Mobile Speakers are the best set of portables I've tried but there's still room for improvement in sound quality.
Outstanding Sound for your MP3 player
This product has nothing but rave reviews from the "experts". Who are the "experts"? My teen Granddaughter and a number of her friends. They are lining up to buy one because its sound is so great. At least 7 people are planning to buy one for themselves after seeing this one and listening to its sound quality.
UPDATE: I had to add another to the list of those who want one of these. My Daughter told me she wanted me to get her one for her Birthday so I did. She was happy as can be with it, but was upset that my Granddaughter swiped hers (she wanted a Black one) and gave her my Red test unit instead. What do you expect from kids?
I can't think of a higher praise for a product than to buy another one, which I did.
UPDATE 2: Now my other Daughter asked me to get her one for Christmas and her son (my Grandson) also wants one for Christmas. I am sure when my other Grandson sees it, he will want one also. So that means I have to buy at least 3 more and maybe 4 since I obviously won't be getting my test unit back either. Wish that Amazon had a volume discount since 5 of these speaker systems will set me back about $162, not counting the one I got from the VINE program. Lucky that Amazon did reduce the price of these units by $6, from $38.35 to its current price of $32.35. Hopefully it will be reduced further in the next 5 weeks before I have to order Christmas presents...
I have previously reviewed a much larger sound system for MP3 players, which needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet and this little device that is smaller than a soda can is four times as loud as that speaker set is despite it having THREE speakers, one being a huge bass speaker. And the Diamond's sound is FAR clearer and and much more crisp than the other unit.
So size and number of speakers doesn't count for everything. A small unit with a big heart will beat it every time.
The entire Diamond Mini Rocker system of two speakers with two bass speakers is the same size as ONE regular speaker from that other system and weighs only 5.6 ounces while the other system weighs 4 1/2 POUNDS yet the other system can't be heard very well from 8 feet away while this little speaker system can be heard clearly from across the room.
My Granddaughter uses it while she is bathing, which wouldn't be safe with speakers that plug into an electric outlet and have to be placed right next to the bathtub where water splashing would ruin them because the sound output is so feeble with that other speaker set.
The only negative to the DIAMOND system, which won't cost a star, is the wire between the two speaker units isn't long enough to get a wide spread between sound outputs.
The wire is long enough to get a fair spread on a desktop or computer area.
Now they are not Harman Kardon home theater speakers but they will really surprise you at the volume of sound that they put out with such a small package.
The two speakers magnetically clip together for transport but will also work in that configuration if you need really compact speakers while walking, but I wouldn't recommend running with them since they may pop out of your pocket and smash on the ground.
The charge they take will last at least the 6-8 hours advertised. I gave them to her for testing a week ago and they are just now in need of a recharge and she has been using them many hours every day.
A nice addition would be suction cup mounts if you want to use them in a car and mount them on the dash since there are few metallic dashes any more plus the magnets that hold the speakers together aren't strong enough to hold their weight if mounted vertically. Any other surface type would make it impossible for the magnets to do anything at all. You can put Velcro tabs on them but that is a bit tacky.
So to sum it up:
Positives:
-Big sound in a small package, though they won't fill a large room with sound and are not meant to.
-Good sound with little or no distortion considering the small package they are contained in
-Long lasting charge
-All wiring except the UCB wire to recharge it are retractable into the speakers so you won't lose the wires inadvertently
-Unique appearance with bass sound coming from accordion tops of each speaker which collapse when not needed
-Soft webbed bag to carry speakers along with charging cord
-Speakers interconnect magnetically for compact transport
Negatives:
-Limited color choices of White, Black and Red
-Wire connecting speakers too short preventing wide spread between speakers in larger areas
The competition speakers are more expensive:
-IHOME Mini speakers cost $43.87
-Altec Lansing (makers of the other system I tested) has a single speaker system called Orbit MP3 $39.95 for a SINGLE speaker with no bass capability. It is powered by 3 AAA rechargable batteries and weighs 11.2 ounces without the batteries. So no stereo capability. The Orbit is twice as large and more than twice as heavy for just a single speaker at 6" in diameter and 5.5" tall.
