This opening fold-out contains a general map of Paris to help you visualize the 8 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.
Discover Paris through 8 districts and 6 maps
Latin Quarter/ The islands/ Montparnasse
Orsay/ Louvre/ Opera
Les Halles/ Le Marais
Invalides/ Champ-de-Mars/ Trocadero
Grands Boulevards/ Montmarte
Bastille/ Faubourg Saint-Antoine/ Oberkampf
Menilmontant/ Belleville/ La Villette
Place d’Italie/ Bibliotheque Nationale/ Bercy
For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Paris has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.
Transportation and hotels in Paris
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.
A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”
“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”– Real Simple
“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal
“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” – San Francisco Chronicle
“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

Don't leave home without it...
My husband and I used this mapguide in Paris in December of 2005 and absolutely LOVED it. It is extremely detailed without being cumbersome and is also very inconspicuous. We even used it several times to design our own walking tours of the City of Lights. We lost it at a patisserie on our last day and actually went back to look for it, because we didn't want to leave it behind. A must-buy for a trip to Paris.
Can't say enough good things about this little book!!
We took a trip to Paris for Christmas in 2006 and used this book there every day, every time we went somewhere. Since this was our first visit to Paris, I do not know what we would have done without this book! It was perfect for us. The map of the Metro made it so easy to navigate and the fold out maps are so simple to use we did not feel like idiots with a huge map. It was great for when we were on the run. Just pull it out, flip it open and there you are! It also helped us plan our trip since all the major sights are marked and many have little write-ups that tell the times and days they are open. This little book is perfect because it is small enough to stuff into a purse or a coat pocket. If you only get one book, I STRONGLY recommend this one! I'm going to Rome this summer and will definitely buy the mapguide again! Don't worry about the pages ripping either. They are very sturdy, thick pages that didn't tear or rip even after having wine AND espresso spilled on them! Yeah, we are a little clumsy.
This book saves lives!
Well OK, not lives, but it made a first time visit to Paris in June 2007 even more wonderful than it already was!
We went to Paris as a family group of eight as the last part of a trip that also included Madrid and Barcelona.
This book and its companion edition on Barcelona were extremely helpful and up to date. The beginning overview easily segues into the separate detail maps of different sections of the city. They are large enough to show street level detail in print large enough to be read without reading glasses. They are easily read in dim light, stiff enough to be read in a breeze and small enough to be somewhat covert (that is, it isn't obvious to everyone within a block that you don't know where you are). The metro and train maps at the back are accurate and a real helpful and thoughtful addition to each book.
The entries on attractions, restaurants, shopping, and music were well written, accurate and up to date. We did not encounter listed places that were out of business or at great variance as to price.
