From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. In this book from the Road to Reading series, Stanley discusses wild horses around the world. Laid out with fairly large type and illustrated with attractive, soft-focus paintings in warm colors, the book begins with the horses of prehistoric times and ends with a heartening message of people working together to save wild horses in many locales. In between, short chapters focus on the wild horses of the Camargue in France, wild ponies on Virginia's Assateague and Chincoteague islands, the wild horses in the mountains "between France and Spain," the Exmoor horses of Britain, the yellow horses of Mongolia, the brumbies of the Australian outback, and the mustangs of Colorado, Nevada, and Wyoming. Though more (and better) maps and more precise information (where in Britain? what are the mountains called?) would have been welcome, this little volume will captivate young horse lovers who may be intimidated by longer books. Great for kids who love horses
This is a really great book for kids who love horses - and our kids do! Now, our kids want to save all the wild horses in the world. They've read this book over and over.
Nice informational book
This is a good book of information. It's really cool to learn about wild horses and how it was for them back almost six million years ago or more! It's cool to know information about wild horses. I never knew they could be so interesting! I love to read about how they dealt with things like swimming from one island to another. I know I would hardly be able to move on that little space on Assateague if I was one of those poor horses. I can't believe people fenced it off like that just for wild birds! Do you have to fence off part of a horse's island for WILD BIRDS? Seriously, it was just terrible for them. Mostly because for a while the horses had nothing to eat but poison ivy and even worse, drink salt water from the ocean! I think it could be very interesting to learn about wild horses and how they lived back then! It is a very good book!
Peaceful and informative
This book shows the basic life of wild horses in the old west. Stanley must have spent some time observing them, because he points out, in a very kid-oriented fashion, many aspects of their lives. It's a little dull for youngsters (unless they are obsessed with horses, of course) but it is informative and the illustrations are lovely and possess the same passion as the text.
