Product Description

The first part of the book is a comprehensive collection of the thoughts, ideas and aspirations of men and women which spans the centuries, nations and denominations. All are chosen to inspire and provoke thought among Christians and non-Christians alike. The second part of the book is an absorbing compilation of biographies of the most prominent Christians of the last two thousand years. Some famous, some less well-known, the lives of these men and women are recorded with concise biographical detail and a fascinating explanation of why they are remembered today. Based on two previous books, The Hodder Book of Christian Quotations and The Hodder & Stoughton Book of Famous Christians, both now fully revised and updated with new entries including Mother Teresa and Cardinal Basil Hume.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Complementing John Bartlett's more general Familiar Quotations, these two affordable quotation books focus on Christian themes but with a difference. While Castle concentrates on quotes from authors such as T.S. Eliot, Jean-Pierre Camus, G.K. Chesterson, St. Francis de Sales, and Pope John XXIII, Manser focuses on biblical quotations. There is some duplication between the two books but minimal duplication with Bartlett. Both books include brief biographical information about the individuals quoted, with Castle providing two to 12 sentences per person and Manser giving just name, birth and death dates, and a descriptive phrase. But unlike Bartlett's, neither book gives the title of the work in which a quote appears, identifying the author only. Castle provides an index to quotations organized by author, while Manser includes both an author index and an index of biblical sources. Quotations in both books range from the Bible to Mother Theresa, Barbara Bush, Dallas Willard, and Martin Luther King Jr. Offering 400 and 600-plus quotes, respectively, these easy-to-use but somewhat specialized books would probably appeal to those needing immediate access to religious or Christian quotations who don't want to spend the time looking through the Bible, using a concordance, or paging through Bartlett's. Libraries with a heavy demand for such material may want to add one of these books to their collections. Laurie Selwyn, San Antonio P.L., TX
