I found this book really interesting for three essential reasons: the very unique neurosis and intensity of the Russian mind; the religous ways of 'Holy Rus'(together with the peasant/aristocratic divide); the relationship with Rasputin.
I would strongly recommend reading Rasputin: The Last Wordin conjunction with this book - I was delighted to find the Iliodor autobiography still available and would say that it helps a great deal amid the tangle of the Rasputin phenomenon.
