Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up--A collection of 34 excerpted or full-text poems, memoirs, articles, essays, speeches, and newspaper accounts written by people who were either victims of the Holocaust or commentators on it at the time. The set is divided into broad chapters: "Antisemitism," "Escalation," "Holocaust," "Resisters," "Liberation," and "Understanding." These sections are introduced with background articles that provide context for the "Voices." Each document is introduced and followed by information about its impact, what happened to its author, and a list for further reading. Since most of the testimonies are from adult writers, almost every page has a sidebar to define the more difficult words or the way they were used in the Nazis' euphemistic vocabulary. Biographical sketches of the contributors are included in boxes throughout. The black-and-white photographs are plentiful, but their quality varies. Both volumes have the same front matter and cumulative index. While there are index entries for "Vatican" and "Catholicism," there are none for "Protestants," "Lutherans," or "Churches," although all are discussed in the text. Overall, this resource effectively teaches about the Holocaust on both a factual and emotional level.
